  • Moms must protect their own timeout

Once every 10 to 12 weeks, something wonderful happens.

I get to hide in a hair salon for an hour and 15 minutes.

No one there needs to be fed or helped onto the potty. No one treats me like a waitress, makes a mess or hits their brother. There’s no pressure to mop floors, fold clothes, pack lunches or give baths. And there’s no incessant “Mommy, mommy, mommy.”

  • 'Zero Dark Thirty' is brutal but good

    “Zero Dark Thirty”
Rated R for strong violence including brutal disturbing images, and for language.
Release Date: Jan. 11 (for wide release)
    Runtime: 157 min
Rating: Brutal but a well crafted film

Kathryn Bigelow’s “Zero Dark Thirty” has been laced with controversy over the scenes of torture and concern from the CIA of how much information she received to make the film.

  • Youth Theatre workshops to prep students for 'Peter Pan'

Students in sixth through 12th grades who reside in Hardin County can participate Saturday in the Youth Theatre of Hardin County winter workshop.

The workshop, which is the first of three, is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center at John Hardin High School. Workshops prepare students for April auditions for the summer musical, “Peter Pan.”

    Additional workshops are 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 9 and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 9.

  • Group reaches New Horizon in music

New Horizon Chorus’ primary goal is to exceed expectations through a cappella harmony.

The 22-member chorus is hoping to grow into a group of more than 100 men and compete internationally, chorus president Randy Roccia said.

The group chartered with the Barbershop Harmony Society in 2002 and its members range in age from high school students to men in their mid-50s.

  • Elizabethtown photographer's work included in Capitol art exhibit

An Elizabethtown photographer is among 28 Kentucky artists whose works are on display in the Capitol Annex in Frankfort.

Photography by David Toczko is included in “Kentucky Visions at the Capitol,” an annual exhibit in hallways and conference rooms of the Kentucky Senate and House offices.

The exhibit, which includes 64 pieces of artwork, is on display through March 26. It is open to the public and coincides each year with the Kentucky General Assembly’s legislative session.

  • 'Promised Land' promises a lecture

Have you ever had that feeling when you go to a movie that it might be a slightly environmental flick and leave feeling like you’ve been lectured?

That’s kind of what you get with “Promised Land.” I think they really tried not to be overtly environmental and keep it in the subtext, sort of. But they didn't try hard enough. The environmental theme became the driving force of the film.

  • Listening to the spoken and unspoken

Last Saturday at home, as our Pomeranian Tybalt followed me down the hall, I turned to our canine companion and casually informed him I was going to shave.

I told him this as I stepped into the upstairs bathroom with him standing in the doorway near the hallway window seat. I offhandedly told him he could jump up on the window seat and wait for me.

It wasn’t that I thought he’d really understand a complete and specific sentence like that, but I tend to talk to Tybalt to include him.

  • Elizabethtown duo enters electronic dance music scene

At one point in his life, Central Hardin High School graduate Jordan Logsdon wanted to be in a rock ‘n’ roll band.

“I really enjoyed rock ‘n’ roll music,” Logsdon said.

That was before the now 21-year-old DJ/producer went to his first electronic dance music event.

Once Logsdon went to such a party and saw the crowds getting into the music produced onstage, he was hooked. He knew he wanted to produce the same kind of music and see the event from the perspective of the DJ.

  • ‘Jack Reacher’ not a reach

    “Jack Reacher”
Rated PG-13 for violence, language and some drug material
    Runtime: 130 minutes
    Release date: December 21
    Rating: Decent action flick.

I’ll be the first to admit I’m not a big Tom Cruise (“Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”) fan. In fact, unless he’s in the hands of a good director, he usually annoys me.

But putting all that aside, “Jack Reacher” surprised me.

  • My goals to accomplish in 2013

I’m not big on resolutions. It sounds so formal and law-like, as if you’re saying “I do so resolve.”

But in a new year, most people are focused on resolving something. I’d rather call them goals.

The other day I posted a few of my goals for 2013 on Facebook. The more I post them, say them out loud or put them in print, the more likely I actually will acheive some of them.

One of the so-called goals is to actually accomplish two of the four main goals I came up with.
