    I will make an enemy of every “Twilight” fan on the planet when I talk of Robert Pattinson’s performance in “Water for Elephants.”

    The Pachyderm has more personality than Pattinson. But at least he smiled a few times in this one.

    The film is based on the best-selling novel written by Sara Gruen. It’s about a veterinary student, Jacob (Pattinson), whose parents die in a car accident right as he’s getting ready to take his final vet school exam.

    Barbara Watkins of Bonnieville has shared several wonderful recipes with us in the past. Remember the Corn Flake Candies, the Dump Chili and the Dump Spaghetti Sauce? This recipe for Real Good Brownies is another keeper.

    Barbara has twin daughters, Linda Riggs, a teacher at Creekside Elementary School who used to write for the Bonnieville newspaper, and Brenda Lynch who is a nurse at Hardin Memorial Hospital.

  • 'Ease on Down the Road' with Michael in movie

    Diana Ross and Michael Jackson will be easing their way to the Historic State Theater in “The Wiz” this weekend.

    The film has been in the news lately since the death of its director, Sidney Lument, on April 9.

    Lument has been nominated for five Academy Awards and is the director behind such classics as “12 Angry Men,” “Serpico,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” “Dog Day Afternoon,” and “Network.”

  • Retired teacher sculpts retail enterprise

    Janet Gream is quick to point out her downtown Elizabethtown buisness is called Kentucky Art Lady, not “the” Kentucky Art Lady.

    Gream didn’t want the name of her gallery to focus on her or have her name in it. The name of her shop doesn’t refer to anyone in specific.

    “My daughter came up with it,” she said of the name.

    The work of local and regional artists fills the business. Baskets, paintings, drawings, pottery, soaps and even socks are some of the handmade arts and craft items in her store.

  • Hardin County residents write faith-based books

    Faith is the topic of two books recently published by current or former Hardin County residents.

    Radcliff resident Darla Daniel has published “The Polluted Pump” in which she encourages readers to investigate their true motives and intentions when it comes to tithing and serving in church.

    The book contains self-check questions at the end of each chapter. It is aimed at those who have been faithfully tithing and serving in church but see no obvious blessings, according to a press release.

  • Multicultural play performed by Toy Box Theatre

    Four multicultural tales comprise “Give & Take,” a children’s play to be presented by Elizabethtown Community and Technical College’s Toy Box Theatre.

    The play will be performed at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Science Auditorium on ECTC’s campus and lasts about an hour. Admission is $2.

    “Give & Take” examines generosity and greed. The production aims to entertain adults while allowing children from the audience to interact with actors.

  • Comedians yuck it up to benefit the American Cancer Society

    Laughter is the best medicine, so the saying goes, and “Comedy For A Cure” is counting on it Friday.

    “Comedy For A Cure,” which will be held at the Historic State Theater, will feature two comedians. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society.

    The night of comedy begins at 8 p.m. and finishes at 10 p.m. Tickets cost $25.

    Providing the laughs will be comedians Don “D.C.” Curry and Spike Davis.

    The Lemon Cheesecake with Gingersnap Crust is another recipe from one of my food columns 20 years ago. I featured this for Easter in 1991, and I’ve served it for most Easter dinners since then.

    When I used to make this, I couldn’t find lemon curd in Hardin County, so I included two different recipes for making it from scratch. I recently found it at Kroger though (the Dickinson brand) so I’m using the store-bought lemon curd this year. I’ve included the lemon curd recipes at left if you want to do everything from scratch.

  • Under Construction has more than 225 years experience

    Though they’ve been playing together as Under Construction only since last summer, the six core members of the bluegrass band have a combined experience of somewhere in the neighborhood of 225 years, member Ricky Allen said.

    Allen called the band members a bunch of “nice people” who care about the craft of music.

    “They always want to make you better,” Allen said.

  • 'Rio' crashes for your children, but could fly with an older audience

    Sitting in the theater watching “Rio,” I found myself laughing a bit and thinking it was kind of cute, then another thought crossed my mind. Is this a kids movie?

    “Rio” is about the last two blue Macaw birds in existence. One, Blu, voiced by Jesse Eisenberg (“The Social Network”), was kidnapped as a little bird and find’s his way to Minnesota where Linda, his person, voiced by Leslie Mann (“Funny People“), finds him and they become friends for life.
