    Barbara Watkins of Bonnieville sent me several recipes recently that you’re going to really enjoy. I’m featuring two of them today.

    Barbara says she does like Jerianne Strange does – cooks up lots of hamburger at a time and freezes it for use later. Barbara got the tip from her daughter years ago. She buys hamburger when it’s on sale, cooks it with onion, then drains it in a colander and rinses it in hot water to get rid of the extra fat. She then puts it in one-pound bags and freezes it.

  • Elizabethtown actor lands role in Cincinnati production

    Central Hardin High School graduate and Northern Kentucky University senior Jimmy Houlihan has found out it’s a jungle out there, but that’s a good thing in this case.

    The Elizabethtown actor is featured in “Disney’s The Jungle Book KIDS,” a production by The Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati.

  • Cecilia author publishes second book

    Cecilia author Dan Lee has published his second book, “The L&N Railroad in the Civil War: A Vital North-South Link and the Struggle to Control It.”

    The non-fiction book was published by McFarland and Company Inc. and recounts the military events along the L&N from 1861 through 1865. Among those events included are the creation of Camp Nevin near Glendale and John Hunt Morgan’s 1862 Christmas raid against the railroad trestles on Muldraugh Hill.

    Devoted “American Idol” fans might remember the names Gina Glockson, David Hernandez, Lakisha Jones and Michael Sarver. They are all top 12 finalists on previous seasons of “American Idol” and will appear in the show “American Idol Stars” in Elizabethtown.

    Judy Wingfield of Elizabethtown sent me this recipe for Crown Jewel Cake after seeing Mary Iseler’s recipe for Church Windows in this column before Christmas.

    Judy says she doesn’t remember where she found the original recipe, but she’s been making it for more than 20 years, and it’s a tradition at her house.

  • National Symphony Orchestra chamber trio presents PAC concert

    A chamber trio from the National Symphony Orchestra will bring the music of Mozart, Beethoven, Shubert and others to the Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center on Saturday.

    “That’s our very first program,” cellist Steven Honigberg said, referring to the PAC venue being the first of three where the trio will play.

    Along with Honigberg, who described himself as a Midwesterner, Russian violinist Natasha Bogachek and Japanese violist Tsuna Sakamoto will perform in the program.

  • 'What Shall I Do?' coming to State Theater

    Louisville playwright Tyrone Goodman will bring a story of a family rebuilding when “What Shall I Do?” is performed at the Historic State Theater in Elizabethtown on Saturday.

    The play, Goodman’s third, concerns a family dealing with divorce and the teenage girl devastated by her parents’ break-up, he said.

  • Authors sign books at Barnes & Noble

    Elizabethtown author Russell Lunsford will be signing his latest book, “Benjamin Nathan Tuggle – Adventurer,” from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at Barnes & Noble in Elizabethtown.

    The book is about a 12-year-old Eastern Kentucky boy who, in 1976, travels through time to the age of Daniel Boone and helps rescue Boone’s daughter who had been captured by Native Americans. It’s a chapter book targeting 8- to 12-year-olds.
