  • Breathe in Christmas

    Christmas decorating hasn’t been as exciting this year as in years past.

    The outdoor lighting has been minimized; it seemed more of a hassle than enjoyable. But part of this year's décor includes a few simple window candle lights.

    At night, I turn off the lights in the house and let the warm glow of the window lights and the lights on the Christmas trees fill my home.

  • 'The Heartland Review' announces two contests

    “The Heartland Review,” a literary publication of Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, is announcing two contests.

    Submissions to the 2011 Joy Bale Boone Poetry Prize will be accepted until Jan. 30. The review requests a $5 contribution for each poem to support the contest and publication.

  • Terry Strange: The man, the music, the teacher

    For more than four decades, Terry Strange has been strumming along to the music of life, beginning with an interest in guitar and mandolin.

    “It’ll be 45 years in July,” Strange said. “I started when I was 5 years old.”

    Over the years, music has become a driving force in Strange’s life, particularly Bluegrass music.

    Today, as the owner of a music studio where he teaches banjo and guitar, among other instruments, Strange is hoping to preserve what he loves.

  • A Dash of Class: Try a cookie exchange for variety

    Nora’s Note:  Two corrections from last week: The amount of margarine in the chocolate fantasy fudge recipe was supposed to be 1 ½ sticks of margarine or ¾ cup instead of 3 cups of margarine. Also, the headline failed to be changed from the previous week and was supposed to be “Getting Ready for Christmas.” Mistakes do happen; I just hope you didn’t try to make Mrs. Claycomb’s fudge with twice the amount of margarine.

  • The Heartland Winds offers free holiday concert

    Winds in December might sound a bit chilly, but if they’re The Heartland Winds and it’s a holiday concert, you’ll likely want to take off your earmuffs so you can listen.
    The community-based wind ensemble will present its winter concert at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Historic State Theater.
    The concert is free and open to the public.
    Director Chuck Campbell said the program is titled “O’ Holy Night.”

  • Leg lamp raffle at the State

    The Historic State Theater in Elizabethtown is raffling off three leg lamps like the one featured in the movie, "A Christmas Story."

    Just like Ralphie's dad, you can win the "fra-gee-lay" trophy to display in your own home. Raffle tickets are $1 each and one winner will be drawn at each showing of the film this weekend.

    Showings are 8 p.m. Friday and 2 and 8 p.m. on Saturday.
