  • Father and son set for guitar concert

    A multi-faceted musician and his son will be in the spotlight Saturday at Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center when the Acoustic Guitar Masters Concert Series 11 presents Tim Thompson.
    Joining Thompson on stage will be his son, Myles, who plays fiddle and mandolin.
    Thompson, a guitarist, singer and songwriter, will perform at 7:30 p.m. with his son. Tickets for the event are $15.
    “It’s very exciting and very fulfilling,” Thompson said about playing onstage with his son.

  • Ladies' Tea at the State

    Women are invited to have a spot of tea Saturday when the Elizabethtown Heritage Council & Woman’s Club Christmas Tea gets underway at the Historic State Theater complex.
    “I think this is our 10th or 11 year,” said Elizabethtown Heritage Council Executive Director Dana Beth Lyddan.
    The formal tea is at 2 p.m. at the First Federal Gallery of the building and is a “ladies only” event.

    That’s because “Lille Julaften Waltz” is an original composition by musician Kenneth Baldwin. It is one of 12 songs on “Strings & Bows: A Heartland Christmas Homecoming,” a CD recorded by Jerry Williams, Alice Burton and Baldwin.

    Jerianne Strange of Elizabethtown (former food columnist for The News-Enterprise) says that between Boy Scouts, 4-H and several other activities, the daily schedule at her home is often hectic. However, she wants to serve her family home-cooked meals. One way she does this is to keep seasoned, cooked hamburger in the freezer. She gave me this tip several months ago, and I’ve been doing it ever since. What a time saver.

    “This is a wonderful time of the year, a time to remember the greatest gift of all, the birth of Jesus,” Green said. “We’ll celebrate Christmas with lots of familiar music and hopefully have an evening that is inspiring, uplifting and encouraging.”

    Something can meet your expectations, in which case you’re generally satisfied; exceed your expectations, in which case you’re generally happy; or fall short of your expectations, in which case you’re generally disappointed.

    But sometimes something can so completely conflict with your expectations yet not be a source of disappointment and, in fact, bring a lot of unexpected joy.
