    Caleb Moore is this month's student editor.

    Caleb is a 17-year-old senior who is home schooled. He is involved with Teen Court and Junior Optimist Octagon International and plays Elizabethtown Christian Academy soccer and Gloria Dei basketball. His hobbies include engineering and design, speech and debate, ultimate frisbee and investments. 

    He volunteers with Feeding America and his future career interests include mechanical engineering, teaching and becoming a pilot.

  • Orchestra auditions challenge young musicians

    There are plenty of strings attached when you are a principal chair in an orchestra. Students are learning this in The Music and Arts Center for Cultural Learning’s Youth Orchestra this fall.

    For the first time, Sept. 26, the orchestra conducted auditions for the various orchestral chairs, with principal chair being the most advanced. In orchestras, like football and other team sports, each person is given a position that best suits their skill level. These positions are called chairs.

    Female firefighters with jackets a little too tight, Little Bo Peep with her high stockings and skirt that’s a little too short and devil costumes with no sleeves, fish nets and red heels.

    Yes, I will agree, definitely not church appropriate.

    Have the Halloween costumes for girls gone too far? I don’t think so.

  • Teaching foreign languages is key ingredient in a quality education

    You might be surprised to learn that, by percentage, most people in the world speak Mandarin Chinese. The second most natively spoken language in the world is Spanish.

    To keep up with our ever-changing global society, students must become foreign language learners. They need to be proficient in more than one language to be competitive in a global job market, to collaborate in global science initiatives and to participate in resolutions to world problems.

  • Lincoln Trail sees the state on field trip

    A days-long field trip at Lincoln Trail Elementary School made the entire state its focus.

    Fifth-grade students at Lincoln Trail in Elizabethtown traveled to various parts of the state as part of field trip that is a 37-year tradition at the school.

    The Kentucky field trip took students to Cumberland Falls, Mammoth Cave, Civil War battlefields and other locations as a way to study the history and geography of the state. It took them just across state lines, too.

  • Hardin County Wonder Pets: hamsters and the hedgehog

    Similar to Linny the Guinea Pig on television's “Wonder Pets,” Hardin County has a few small fuzzy pets living in classrooms.

    Franklin the panda hamster came to Casey Olive’s fourth-grade science class at Lakewood Elementary  School in Elizabethtown in March. His visit was initiated by a biology unit. The class used Franklin when studying mammals, nocturnal and endothermic animals and life cycles.
