  • Student finds future through co-op

    Kylie Keen began her junior year of high school without an idea of what her post-graduation life would hold. Now, as she enters the last months of her high school career, she knows exactly where she’s headed.

    Working in the office of Ann Carnes, a local dentist, has given Keen, a senior at Elizabethtown High School, a direction for her future. Keen plans to pursue a dental hygiene certification and possibly a career as a dentist.

  • Elizabethtown engineering students get real life experience

    Students filed into Justin Line’s engineering classroom with engineering plans, rulers and ideas to plot out the building design for the weight room of the athletic complex at Elizabethtown High School.

    The students’ task is to redesign the weight room because the original plans changed in shape and size. The class has to readapt the plans to the new dimensions and present their plans to the school for consideration in the new complex.

  • How it works: NHHS students get hands-on engineering lessons

    Students in North Hardin High School’s Project Lead the Way program are learning to build local area networks and a few robots to boot.

    The program is a part of local funding provided by Project Lead the Way, a national provider of science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum in middle and high schools.

    Some students are working on the in-class LAN by building PCs from junk and using routers and switches, teacher Heath Anderson said.

  • LaRue schools prepare annual improvement plans

    Under the Unbridled Learning assessment and accountability system, the main goal of schools and districts across Kentucky is to ensure that all students, when they graduate from high school, will be college or career ready.

    In order to determine how these schools and districts are accomplishing this goal, the Kentucky Department of Education requires each of them to develop and submit an annual comprehensive improvement plan.

  • ‘The EVENT’ to celebrate schools, raise money for teacher grants

    The Elizabethtown Educational Foundation (EEF) is pleased to announce the EIS annual celebration to be held 7 to 10 p.m. Feb. 9 at Pritchard Community Center. The event is being billed as “The EVENT 2013 – Feel the Love,” and tickets may be purchased for $35 at any EIS school or the board of education office.

  • Engineering engages middle school students

    Armed with a stack of books in their arms and many wearing Converse Chucks on their feet, eighth-grade students at J.T. Alton Middle School are taking a fresh approach to science and math in the Project Lead the Way Engineering Academy.

    “I love this class so much because we are able to do what we want in a unique experience because we’ve never had anything like this before,” said student Evan Borzotra.

    Traditionally, January is the time we review the events and progress of the past year and plan and set goals for the year ahead. 

    Perhaps this tradition is fitting considering the origin of the month’s name. The word January originated from the Roman god Janus whose image is depicted by two faces; one looking backward and one looking forward.
