  • Student Showcase: 'Live Mas'

    By ALIZABETH GROW

I know relating to me is difficult, even for those people who surround me every day, and I can’t force them to do so, but despite my “gift,” we share both sorrow and laughter. Every day, I hold my head up and take this world head-on instead of turning and dodging around corners as I did a lifetime ago, before I accepted that Tourette’s syndrome can be both a curse and a blessing.

  • Student Showcase: 'Running'

    By CORTNI TROUBLEFIELD

I can feel the scream trying to escape my throat, but it’s too dry. The adrenaline is pumping and I’m too terrified to make a sound. My breathing consists of short, fast breaths, and my heart feels as if it will burst right out of my chest at any second.

Each year, before Thanksgiving, calls start to come in to our center from folks who want to sponsor children and/or families for Christmas.

  • Community lends a hand in student success

    By NANNETTE JOHNSTON

The adage is true. It does take a village to raise a child. And, the older the children get, the more people it takes.

We live in a wonderful community where there are people who graciously help our school district with their time, talent and treasure. The village lends a hand to its children so they can become the next generation’s leaders in making the village stronger and even more fruitful.

  • Heartland students send art, treats to overseas soldiers

Heartland Elementary School students worked this month to send deployed soldiers some art with heart.

Third-grade art club members at Heartland spent time at their recent club meetings gathering items and making crafts to send in a care package to a group of soldiers who came to the attention of art teacher Bethany Whelan.

Friends of Whelan were planning to create a care package for a deployed soldier, and Whelan decided it would be a great project for her students to make art for the soldiers in the unit.
