Like adults, children have a wide range of preferences when it comes to books. But also like adults, a book or book series sometimes becomes a craze.

Kids’ picks range from the classics to hit series. In between are books feeding specific interests, from princesses and trucks to vampires and athletes, area library staffers said.

Movies often bump a book to the top of the must-read list.

Throughout the years, the function of the school library has changed. While books remain at the core of a library, technology has  pushed the library to the forefront of learning at all age levels.

From apps to learning labs, technology is a part of today’s library.

At John Hardin High School, the library has a mobile iPad lab to use throughout the school through Wi-Fi.

“Suddenly learning is engaging and fascinating,” said Jan O’Daniel, library media specialist at JHHS.

LaRue County Schools has been selected as one of four “Diamond in the Rough” districts in Kentucky by the Bluegrass Institute forPublic Policy Solutions for LaRue’s notably above-average academic performance versus per pupil funding despite the district’s student poverty rate.

The other districts include Eminence Independent and Graves and Mason counties.
