Cooking is a family tradition. There are many great cooks in my family, starting with my grandmothers.

These two ladies are not only great cooks but also amazing women.

One was raised on a farm with five brothers and became a mother of three, grandmother to six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The other grew up in West Virginia, worked as a cafeteria cook in area schools and became a mother to two daughters and grandmother to four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

It is time to continue our alphabetical tour of the produce section. Today, we reach the letter T. And what item in the produce section is better known than the tomato?

Then, there is the ever famous question: Is a tomato a fruit or a vegetable? A tomato is a vegetable, but it is a fruit type of vegetable, which grows and blooms and then the product grows from that bloom. Other fruit types of vegetables include cucumbers, green peppers, zucchini and squash.

There’s nothing better in the summer than to come home from work and make a great sandwich with some sort of fresh vegetable as a side.

A favorite sandwich is Italian grilled cheese. That might not be the name for it, but for lack of anything else to call the sandwich, we’ll go with Italian grilled cheese. It’s grilled and it has cheese and Italian ingredients, so the name fits.

There is nothing like a county fair. As many would say, “It’s the greatest show in town.” Well, it was the only fair in town last week, and I hope you did not miss it. There is something for everybody.

Last Monday, I judged the culinary arts contests. There were lots of different cakes, pies, candies and assorted baked goods. It was a delight, and since I know so many cooks in Hardin County, I asked the chairpersons, Dee Dee Cooper and Nan Filburn of Vine Grove Homemakers, to turn over the entry tags.
