  • The List: Protecting kids from deadly hot vehicles

    The Kentucky Department for Public Health recently unveiled the elements of a national awareness campaign to help reduce child vehicular deaths caused by heat stroke. The unveiling came shortly after an incident in Louisville in which a 2-year-old died after being left in a hot car.

    Last year, the worst year on record, 49 children in the United States died from heat stroke while unattended in vehicles.

  • Calvary Assembly of God welcomes new youth pastors

    Pastor Jeff Schexneider joins the congregation in welcoming Charles and Summer Crowder as the new youth pastors of Calvary Assembly of God. Charles Crowder is from Henderson and Summer Crowder is from Bernie, Mo. Charles Crowder is pursuing a degree in church leadership and Summer Crowder’s degree will be in evangelism and discipleship. They both graduate from Central Bible College, (Assemblies of God) in December 2011.

  • The Red Cross has an Angel on its shoulder

    Angel Gates is a woman who works hard and plays hard. She's a woman driven by love for her family, giving back to her community and blasting her foes on the paintball field.

    A stroke, a wheelchair, even seizures, couldn't change that.

    Gates, of Rineyville, has been volunteering in some way or another for many years. She started volunteering with a migrant education program when her oldest son started school. She started volunteering with the American Red Cross 12 years ago.

  • Lions Club members welcome Richard Roland

    The Elizabethtown Lions Club welcomed Elizabethtown High School Student of the Month Richard Roland. Richard has been director of operations for the Elizabethtown High School Football team, official scorer for Lady Panthers basketball and also has earned the highest honor in Boy Scouts, Eagle Scout. He plans to attend Elizabethtown Community and Technical College and Western Kentucky University to pursue a bachelors degree in elementary education. Pictured are Lion Patricia Zeitz, Richard Roland, his stepmother, Jennifer, and his father, Richard.

  • May student editor

    Kerry Skiff is this month's student editor for Rising Voices.

    A junior, who is homeschooled and a part of the Christian Educational Consortium, Kerry is involved in volleyball and soccer at Elizabethtown Christian Academy. Her hobbies include playing the flute.

    Her future career interests include teaching and journalism.

    As editor for the May issue of Rising Voices, Kerry led discussion and assigned stories and photos.

    She joined Rising Voices to gain journalism experience.

  • Exchange student experiences a year of growth

    People make choices every day, and a decision I made completely changed my life. With God’s will, I became a foreign exchange student from Ukraine with the program FLEX. 

    FLEX gives students a chance to live with a host family and attend a U.S. high school for a year. The program is very competitive. Nearly 7,000 students submitted applications and only 200 from Ukraine became finalists. Fortunately, I was one of them.
