  • Chapter 1050 of the Elizabethtown National Active and Retired Federal Employees met in April after a winter hiatus. Members brought paper products for Clarity Solutions Crisis Pregnancy Center and used books for sale to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association.

    During the business meeting, chapter president Mary Tom Haun shared information and announcements gleaned from April’s State Convention as well as committee chairs.

  • Retired Sgt. Maj. and Mrs. William C. McDaniel present four cases of food to Warm Blessings. The McDaniels are residents of Atria Senior Living in Elizabethtown.

  • Residents from all over Hardin County stopped at noon Thursday at the H.B. Fife Courthouse to pray together for National Day of Prayer.

    The ceremony opened with scripture from 2 Chronicles 7:14 and continued with a call to prayer by a shofar horn demonstrated by Tom Bissig, event coordinator. Diane Bissig then called out each of the cities in Hardin County so all were represented.

    “I’m grateful for the people who showed up today because you’re supporting the Lord God,” Tom Bissig said.

  • At the March 25 meeting of the Elizabethtown Lions Club, Elizabethtown High School student Jesse Giles was recognized as the club’s student of the month. Giles has a 4.0 grade-point average, ranking second in her class. She is a member of the Beta Club, Y Club, Pep Club, Spanish Club and student council. Sports include soccer and swimming. Giles plans to attend the University of Louisville. Accompanying her were her parents, Tim and Billie Giles, and presenting was Lion Al Mather.

ADE is an abbreviation for Alcohol Driver Education, BAC is the Blood Alcohol Concentration reading, KAPS stands for Kentucky Alternative Programs, EIP stands for Early Intervention Program and VIP stands for Victims Impact Panel. A service fee is added to all DUIs and court costs are added to all charges. Birth year is in parenthesis.

  • A few weeks ago I found myself referencing “The Man From Atlantis,” a short-lived TV series from the ‘70s. The show featured Patrick Duffy as a guy who has special powers when in water.

    Those around my age bracket — I will be 54 in June — might remember it.

    I’m sorry.

    I never did watch that show, but I remember being aware of it. Even back then I thought it looked like a cancellation waiting to happen.

  • When you think of westerns, one name in Hollywood rises above everyone else’s — the great John Wayne.

    He was the movie hero of his day featured in not only westerns but also many war films and other action flicks.

    I have a fondness for John Wayne films because they are a connection to my dad. He loved the Duke and I think he had seen all of his movies several times.
