  • If you sing along to your favorite songs with a hairbrush as a microphone, the United Way of Central Kentucky has a contest for you.

    Entries for the 2011 Heartland Music Festival United Way of Central Kentucky Lip Sync contest are due Friday. The entry must include the name of the group, name of song or songs with a five-minute limit, group contact person and music on a CD. The contest is limited to the first 15 entries and there is a minimum of two people per group or maximum of 25 persons in a group.

  • Everyone always knows when they see a Jerianne Strange recipe, it’s going to be great, and this Banana Split Dessert is no exception. Jerianne said, “This is a tried-and-true fabulous dessert – great for a potluck, picnic, having friends over or just for the family.”

    This was a huge hit in the newsroom when I made it for the picture.

  • Another Avenger hit theaters last weekend with much hype and expectation.

    “Thor” joins “The Incredible Hulk” and “Iron Man” in the Marvel Comics Avenger movie dynasty. This time British actor/director Kenneth Branagh is at the helm.

  • Starting today, we are going to take a culinary field trip through fruits and vegetables, and you won’t even have to get up from your comfortable chair. We will start with an “A” fruit and “A” vegetable and on the second Thursday of the month, we will continue our culinary tour alphabetically. I hope to provide you with some new recipes that will help you reach out to new tastes, especially for your family members and young ones.

  • Driving on Dixie the other day, I realized another part of my childhood disappeared.

    I heard about this kind of thing from my parents. They would lament about the disappearance of record stores and turntables. The “good old days,” you might say.

    My lament is the death of the video rental store. Redbox and Netflix might be to blame for this.

  • The foundation for Vernon Huffines’s home woodcraft business might be traced back 60 years or so.

    That was when a man, who bought timber from his father, gave his father a wooden knife.

    About 15 years ago, Huffines decided to try to reproduce the item. The Elizabethtown man has improved in his craftsmanship since then, he said, and his catalog includes a number of wood items.

    “(Making) wooden knives is my forte,” he said.

  • Some members of the band Otter Creek Express have been playing together for more than 50 years.

    After different band names and group members they decided on the band name simply because they all live near Otter Creek in Meade County. The named seemed to fit.

    “We’ve settled on this and I think it’s permanent,” vocalist Jack Whelan said.
