  • t won’t be long before youngsters will tear into those delicately wrapped Christmas gifts around a tree.

    As a kid, I was guilty of this. I might as well also confess that every year from about 5 years of age through 18, I would tear part of the gift wrapping on a present to see what it was covering up, and then sneak the gift to the back of the tree so mom and dad wouldn’t notice.

    A few times they did.

  • God called him to the ministry at age 18, but the Rev. William Curle of Hodgenville ran from his call for many years until God “loved him back” to where he needed to be, he said.

    He didn’t really do anything devastating as he ran. He remained active in church but it took him a long time to surrender to his call, he said.

    As his calling unfolded, he’s worn many hats, working at Dow Corning in Elizabethtown until 2006, farming and a preaching ministry that began in 1992.

  • Don and Vicki Stevenson of Elizabethtown will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary today, Dec. 16, 2012.

    They were married Dec. 16, 1972, in Spokane, Wash.

    Mr. Stevenson was raised in Spokane and retired as a lieutenant colonel from the U.S. Army. Mrs. Stevenson was raised in Seattle and is employed at Seasons of Elegance.

    They have three children, Stacy Stevenson Nichols, Capt. Todd Stevenson and Jessica Stevenson; and seven grandchildren.

    I still can’t grasp the feeling it is almost Christmas, I guess this weather doesn’t indicate that time of year is here. Though I for one have been enjoying the warmer temperatures and beautiful sunshine.

    OUT AND ABOUT. We enjoyed eating lunch with the Modern Woodmen the past week. This month we ate at Kentucky Fried Chicken. I don’t know as yet where the next meeting will be. We enjoy the meal and fellowship with friends.

  • Pat and Donetta Eastridge of Sonora announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Brandi Eastridge, to Bo Piper, son of George and Kathy Piper of Sonora.

    The bride-to-be graduated from Western Kentucky University with a degree in middle grades education. She is a language arts teacher with Hart County Schools.

    The prospective groom attended Elizabethtown Community and Technical College and is employed at Altec Industries.

    The weather finally has gotten colder. It seems more like December. I can’t help but wonder when we will get some snow. We did have some snow showers Dec. 10. I hope we will have a white Christmas.

    CLUB NEWS. The HowevalleyVertreesCommunity Club will have its holiday meal and meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The meat will be provided. Please bring dishes of food to share. All members and their families are encouraged to attend.
