  • Zonta Club of Elizabethtown Vice President Gail Crain and Loretta Cardin, far right, welcome Lois Shinkle, guest speaker, to the April 24 club meeting at Shoney’s. Shinkle shared her experiences in Haiti. Members made contributions toward a school being built here.

  • At the April meeting for the Central Kentucky Art Guild, member Debbie Beyerlein was chosen Artist of the Month. Her watercolor painting is “The Battery”.   • The Elizabethtown Rotary Club heard from one of its own during the regular meeting April 29. Rotarian Bob Swope updated the club on the ‘Rotary Cares’ initiative. The signature project of the ‘Rotary Cares’ effort is an international partnership with Living Waters for the World in which Rotarians install clean drinking water systems in Guatemala.

  • The Lincoln Trail Area Master Gardeners Association President Joni House Webb presents scholarships to Kitty Timbers and Vasiliki Wilk at the April meeting.

  • One of my favorite things to do is try a dish at a restaurant and then attempt to reproduce it at home. Sometimes I get pretty close; other times it’s a massive failure.

    On a trip to Olive Garden several years ago, I tried fried ravioli. It quickly became one of my favorites.

    A frequent stop on vacations in Gatlinburg is an Italian restaurant called Best Italian. One of its appetizers is the best fried ravioli you’ve ever put in your mouth.

  • Yes, Virginia, nerds have holidays. One of the biggest holidays happened over the weekend.

    May the 4th, otherwise known as Star Wars day, has become a geeky holiday for many fans. It takes place on May the 4th as a play on the mantra “May the Force be with you.”

  • Spider-Man fans’ Spider-Senses have been tingling in anticipation of this summer’s second installment of the franchise re-launch, “The Amazing Spider-Man 2.”

    It fulfills promises of sticking with comic book story threads although a few webs sling in other directions.

    Andrew Garfield returns as Spidey, along with his real-life love interest, Emma Stone, as Gwen Stacy. But there are relationship troubles. Haunted by a promise to her father to keep her safe, he questions their relationship.
