  • Terri Prater recently was guest speaker at a Radcliff Rotary Club meeting.

    Prater a fellow Rotarian, member of the East Louisville Sunrise Rotary Club and past president of the Jeffersontown Rotary.

    She spoke about the “Shoes for Souls” project, which seeks to provide shoes for millions of children and adults in the United States and around the world. Lack of footwear has serious health and social consequences.

  • The service project for the July meeting of the Zonta Club of Elizabethtown was large boxes of cereal for Helping Hand of Hope. David Dozer of Helping Hand of Hope was the guest at the meeting, telling members about the work of the organization and future plans for a new facility.

    The Zonta Club will holds its 20th annual golf scramble Sept. 15 at the Heartland Golf Club. Proceeds will be divided between Helping Hand of Hope and Zonta Club scholarships for nontraditional women students.

  • Summer is the season for grilling outdoors but it’s not much fun when the temperatures are high. Fortunately, this summer has seen a few cooler evenings, which are perfect for firing up the grill.

    My grilling technique usually involves throwing a bunch of oils and spices together with whatever I’m cooking and seeing what they will do over the fire.

  • Thanks to all who called or sent anniversary greetings to Mike and me. It was a very special day, and since it occurred on a Sunday, we had our marriage blessed at the end of the 10 a.m. service at St. James Catholic Church. We were presented with a beautiful silver chalice from the parish, of which we’ve been members for more than 40 years.

  • Tuesday through Saturday most weeks, Bill Geohagan reports for volunteer duty at St. Vincent de Paul Consignment Store on North Mulberry Street in Elizabethtown.

    Arriving most days about 8:30 a.m. — an hour and a half before the store opens — Geohagan repairs and refinishes furniture to be sold at the store. He’s usually finished with his work and leaves by noon.

    At 91, Geohagan believes in keeping active and helping others.

    “I’m gonna stop when I drop,” he said.

  • I recently had a conversation with a college-level English instructor who was lamenting the fear students have in making public presentations. She said the fear is evident in most of her students and yet she knows how important it is for these students to give public presentations.

  • Paul and Brenda Monin of Bardstown announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Kimberly Monin of Bardstown, to Robert Coté of Elizabethtown, son of Bob and Cindi Coté of Elizabethtown.

    The bride-to-be is a 2010 graduate of Bellarmine University with a Bachelor of Science in nursing. She is a registered nurse at Hardin Memorial Hospital.

    The prospective groom is a 2008 graduate of Central Hardin High School. He is a meat clerk at Kroger.

    The wedding is Aug. 30, 2013, at Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral.
