  • Vine Grove Chapter No. 122 Order of the Eastern Star, honored the military by making home-made cookies. They started collecting names and addresses of some service members over the past month. Several chapter members donated money to help defray the cost of mailing. Then they went to work and members and friends made more than 170 dozen cookies. Then on July 17, the group gathered to complete the boxing and mailing efforts. A total of 25 boxes now have been mailed. Each military person received a thank you card for their service to the country along with the sweet treats from home.

  • The POW/MIA Flag Guard held its first annual awards ceremony July 6. Vietnam Veteran Motorcycle Club Chapter B hosted the event. Volunteers were recognized for their support and participation in flag guard ceremonies and its petition drive and other activities.

At the ceremony, flag guard co-founder Loretta Sherod noted the number of homeless veterans in Louisville and that many suffer post-traumatic stress disorder.

  • “Red 2” continues the adventures of ex-CIA agent Frank Moses, played again by Bruce Willis, and his rag-tag spy friends.

  • N-E Newsroom Log 23JL2K13: Last week the personnel environment appeasement unit, which some call “air conditioning,” began malfunctioning on my side of the base of operations.

Despite a day without the adjusted atmosphere provided by the unit, we scraped by, taking breaks as needed to revive ourselves at other locations in The N-E mothership where other P.E.A. units remain intact and functioning. Thanks to the actions of an off-site assistance crew, who managed to provide a temporary repair, we were but a day without atmospheric relief.

  • The column during last week of the month is Recipe Round Up. It is made up of recipes people have lost and I have found for them, recipes that have been submitted to be shared and some that are leftover from prior columns. Please feel free to email or mail those to me in care of The News-Enterprise. I work at home on my trusty laptop and mail and emails are sent to me at my home.

  • Breakfast not only is the most important meal of the day, it is often my favorite, too.

Unfortunately, I don’t get to cook breakfast during the week as I fly out the door on my way to work, but I enjoy trying recipes that go beyond the cereal bowl.

This week’s recipes kick breakfast favorites up a notch. They also are perfect for a fancy brunch or breakfast buffet for the family.

Breakfast Cupcakes are a darling way to combine hash browns and scrambled eggs for a breakfast treat you easily can eat with your fingers.
