  • Radcliff City Councilman Stan Holmes receives his Level 1 Leadership Award at Kentucky League of City Convention from KLC First Vice President Mayor Bill Sheckles.

  • The 38th annual Knights of Columbus Tootsie Roll Drive is Oct. 26 and 27 in Elizabethtown.

    Knights will hand out Tootsie Roll candy in shopping centers and retail areas, accepting contributions that will benefit developmentally disabled citizens of Hardin County.

  • The first Optimist Club of Radcliff Opt-2-Run for Kids 5K Run and Walk was Sept. 14. The day was perfect with cool weather and low humidity. Participants began arriving as early as 7:30 a.m. to sign in or register and continued until the countdown from 10 at 8 a.m.

    Thirty-five runners and walkers began their route in front of Colvin Community Center in Radcliff. The run lasted approximately one hour, with the first runner finishing at 21:35.

  • The benefit auction for Neal McDowell and family on Sept. 23 was publicized by local newspapers, radio, Facebook, printed fliers and word of mouth. We are pleased to report the event was a resounding success.

    Relatives, friends, co-workers, acquaintances and members of many church families turned out to enjoy the fellowship of sharing a meal and joining in lively bidding for the numerous auction items, gift certificates and homemade cakes and goodies. The day was opened and closed with prayer.

  • For a foodie, the advent of fall means soup and chili season has arrived.

    Spicy tortilla soup is a good step between soup and chili. It’s spicy like chili but is a soup so it’s not as thick.

    I used less chili powder and cumin than the recipe suggests. Spices in a recipe usually can be adjusted for an individual’s taste.

    If you’ve cooked much with spicy chili peppers such jalapeno, you know there’s a risk of slight pain. Contact to the skin can cause a burning or stinging sensation.

  • Tiphany and Josh Braden of Elizabethtown announce the birth of a daughter, Laila Jayde Braden, on April 19, 2013, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown. She weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces and was 19.5 inches long.

    Maternal grandparens are Carrie and Shane Kelly of Elizabethtown and Dale Kelley of Louisville. Paternal grandparents are Carmen Braden, Josh Braden and Nora Miller, all of Elizbethtown.

  • Musicals were always a part of my childhood. My mom loves musicals, most of which she’s seen in movie form but occasionally we take a trip out to see one live on stage.

    Basically, I got the homegrown version of musical appreciation every time mom watched a musical.

    Sunday we ventured out with friends to the Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center at John Hardin High School to see the pro/am production of “Les Misèrables.”

  • Ellis Hutcherson celebrated his 95th birthday Oct. 8, 2013, at Helmwood Healthcare Center in Elizabethtown.

    He was born Oct. 8, 1918. His wife is Georgia Hutcherson.
