  • Most of the time, most people find themselves cheering on the little guy.

    When David faced and defeated Goliath, everyone cheered, “Way to go, Dave.”

    When a small band of rebel forces took on the galactic empire in “Star Wars,” we all yelled, “Use the force, Luke.”

    When Rocky took on Apollo Creed, we joined the chant and yelled, “Rocky, Rocky, Rocky.”

    When the underdog defeats the No. 1 team in any sport, we all suddenly become fans.

  • Wink’s Smokehouse recently held its fourth annual Senior Q at Helm-wood HealthCare Facility in Elizabethtown.
    The team fed residents, staff and all their families a barbecue meal consisting of barbecue pork and chicken. The meats, sauces, green beans and baked beans, rolls and trimmings all were donated by Wink’s Smoke-house and the men of the Presbyterian Church. The HHC facility provided coleslaw, desserts and drinks.

  • In a market that doesn’t have many inspirational family films, “Dolphin Tale” is a refreshing change.

    It is a story based on a real life rescued dolphin named Winter who was found caught in a crab trap that damaged her tail. The tail had to be amputated and Winter now swims with the aid of a prosthetic tail.

  • After publishing her work for 25 years, often earning spots in highly regarded literary publications, Vada Scott Johnson is introducing her first collection of poetry.

    Johnson, a Radcliff resident, hosts a signing of “Songs of Life” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Victoria Blue on Ky. 313 in Vine Grove.

    “All the poems are written straight from the heart and they are, literally, songs of my life,” Johnson said.

  • Sometimes, without planning, the things you become a part of become a part of you.

    This month The Bard’s Corner Writer’s Group turns 9 years old, and as the founder and facilitator of the group, I’m more than a little amazed at this.

    Mainly, it’s because I never planned to start a group. Initially I wanted to join one that was already established.

    Just before I started a group, I got a chance to join a wonderful group that meets at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College.

  • Hardin County Playhouse holds auditions at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26-27 for “A Christmas Carol: A Ghost Story of Christmas.”

    The auditions are at Plum Alley Theater in the Historic State Theater complex.

    Twelve men, 11 women, six boys and five girls are needed for the production. Additionally, eight to 10 ensemble members are needed.
    No prepared material is required of those auditioning.

    Performances of “A Christmas Carol” are Dec. 9-11 and Dec. 15-18.

  • Children have been a continual theme in artist Mary Lou Hall’s life. From teaching to raising her own children and life with her five grandchildren, children are the subject of her portraits.

    Hall, of Elizabethtown, is an established member of the local arts community with paitings displayed throughout Hardin County and Kentucky.

    Her medium of choice is watercolor and she thinks it’s the best way to present a child on canvas.

    Recently, she’s been inspired by reflections, particularly on surfaces such as glass.\

  • Getting to know Ray Allan Mackey:

    Travel: When he’s not farming he loves to travel. He doesn’t get to travel as much as he’d like because farming is an around the clock, around the calendar occupation. His family favorite spot is the Smokey Mountain National Park because of location and ease of getting there. A few years ago, we went out west on a bus trip and spent one day in Yellowstone Park, which he said might be one of the most beautiful spots on earth.

  • Life Acouts Joshua Nightengale and Michael Bentley from Boy Scout Troop 24 in Elizabethtown during annual popcorn sales at the Pilot gas station in Lebanon Junction. Proceeds from popcorn sales are used to pay for summer camp and leadership training attendance for the scouts and to pay for activities that are hosted at the council level.
     

  • Fall is almost here, and I’m already craving soup. I love a good soup – even more than desserts, believe it or not.

    Both of these soups featured today have been in my column before, but to me, they really are the best. I love them, and I nearly always have a quart or two of each of them in the freezer.
