An Elizabethtown grandfather was arrested Monday morning and charged with felony assault after reportedly striking his teenage grandson at least twice with a wooden can, causing welts and bleeding.
John Starks Jr., 59, is charged with second-degree assault — domestic violence, a Class C felony punishable by five to 10 years in prison, if convicted.
According to an arrest citation, Elizabethtown police went to a Crestwood Drive home in reference to a physical altercation. When police arrived, the grandson, 14, already had left the home and went to Elizabethtown High School. Starks admitted to hitting his grandson “multiple times,’’ the citation stated.
Elizabethtown Police Department officers went to EHS and interviewed the teen. According to the citation, he had “visible welts’’ from being struck with a cane, including on his left wrist and the left side of his head that also was bleeding.
Police then went back to Crestwood Drive to arrest Starks.
Starks is scheduled to appear Tuesday in Hardin District Court.
