  • First Federal sells four Indiana branches

    First Federal Savings Bank in Elizabethtown is selling four retail banking offices in Indiana to raise capital and meet its goals.

    A subsidiary of First Savings Financial Group Inc. has entered into a definitive purchase and assumption agreement with the Elizabethtown-based bank to buy the Indiana offices in Corydon, Elizabeth, Georgetown and Lanesville.

    These are all of First Federal Savings Bank’s southern Indiana branches.

  • Chamber hosts 11th annual health expo

    About 50 exhibitors lined up Wednesday inside Pritchard Community Center for the Hardin County Chamber of Commerce Health and Human Services Expo.

    The 11th annual health expo was the first for the combined chambers. Chamber President-CEO Brad Richardson said he believes the expo sells out every year.

    “There’s a history here,” he said.

  • Local employers lauded as good places to work

    Hardin County once again is home to some of the best workplaces in and around Louisville.

    Three local employers have made return appearances on a list of Top Places to Work by the Louisville Courier-Journal. Each appeared on the list last year.

    The list named the top 10 workplaces in the Louisville Metro area in three divisions; small, mid-size and large. Hardin County Schools was the ninth employer in the “large” category, and First Federal Savings Bank and LaRue County Schools were sixth and eighth, respectively, in the mid-size division.

  • USDA herd counts influence price for producers and consumers

    On Jan. 27, USDA released its annual cattle inventory report, giving the total number of cattle residing in the U.S. as of Jan. 1. As expected, the report suggested that the U.S. cattle industry will continue to experience short supplies and high prices for calves and feeder cattle and as a result higher retail beef prices. 

    However, the numbers released also show the trend toward herd reductions may be coming to an end.

  • Swopes celebrate 60 years in business

    Nearly 60 years ago in March of 1952, Swope Dodge-Plymouth was celebrating its grand opening at the corner of College and Mulberry streets. The dealership already had been open for a couple months, but people crammed into the one-car showroom for the event.

    As Bill Swope remembers, two competitors, Buick and Pontiac dealers, were there that day and were overheard to make the following exchange: “I’ll give them six months,” one dealer said about Bill Swope and his brother Sam.

    A new drugstore in Radcliff is the third installment in what might be seen as a miniature chain developing in Hardin County.

    Owner Gary Hamm said he enjoys giving customers multiple options for their health care needs, but he doesn’t want to lose the personal appeal of independent businesses that made him get into the pharmacy business.

    ApotheCARE officially opened Jan. 16 in Radcliff after a soft opening four days earlier at Radcliff Square shopping center off East Lincoln Trail Boulevard.

  • New pharmacy coming to Radcliff

    Radcliff residents will soon have a new independent pharmacy to patronize after losing several recently.

    Save Rite Drugs Radcliff is to open soon in the city, likely at the end of the month, owner Jonathan Van Lahr said. Van Lahr owns Save Rite Drugs Irvington and Brandenburg Pharmacy Care, and decided to open a store in Radcliff after seeing several independent pharmacies close recently.

    Van Lahr said he felt the city needed a strong independent pharmacy, especially after seeing Lincoln Trail Pharmacy, Radcliff Drugs and Wooldridge Drugs close.

  • Local home sales decline after strong 2010

    After a significant boost from the Base Realignment and Closure initiative in 2010, residential home sales in the Hardin County area declined slightly in 2011.

    According to numbers from the Heart of Kentucky Association of Realtors, the number of residential sales in its area fell from 2,207 in 2010 to 1,643 in 2011.
