  • Belk marks remodeling with morning celebration

    More than 200 people visited Towne Mall — some more than three hours before it opened Wednesday — to celebrate renovation of Belk department store.

    While lined up in the chill to receive a free Belk gift card, customers were entertained by two-time “American Idol” contestant Kenzi Lewis and a pair of dancing teddy bears.

  • Leave those stones unturned

    Many landowners and small enterprises, including local governments, routinely obtain gravel from creeks and streams for road maintenance and fill. While this is an inexpensive way to obtain gravel, it also is illegal. Kentucky regulations clearly require anyone (including governments) to obtain a permit from the Department for Natural Resources before removing gravel from a creek. Anyone found doing so without a permit is subject to citation and fines of up to $5,000 per day.

  • Belk ready to celebrate makeover

    Belk department store in Towne Mall celebrates its grand re-opening Wednesday and the first several hundred customers will leave with gift cards.

    The $1.4 million renovation is to be unveiled at 9:30 a.m. with a ribbon-cutting and a $5,000 check presentation to the Elizabethtown Women’s Club.

    Gift cards will be given to the first 400 customers in line. The cards will range from $5 to $500 in value.

    Two-time “American Idol” contestant Kenzi Lewis from LaRue County is scheduled to sing during the morning’s events.

  • Former senator steps down from bank board

    After 46 years, Walter "Dee" Huddleston is stepping down from the board of First Financial Service Corp. and its banking subsidiary First Federal Savings Bank of Elizabethtown.

    The company announced the decision Monday although his retiremet was effective Sept. 19. 

    A former U.S. senator and broadcaster, Huddleston spent 15 years as board chairman during his service as director. He will retain the title of director emeritus.

  • LaRue chamber welcomes new executive director

    Krista Levee, the new executive director of the LaRue County Chamber of Commerce, is no stranger to the county – or the state.

    Levee lived in LaRue County almost seven years before moving because of her husband’s job change. They were gone four years before returning to the area.

    “Now we’re back and it’s like coming home,” said Levee, a Hopkins County native. “It’s good to be back in a small town where you know everybody.”

  • Business groups honor Brett Guthrie

    U.S. Rep. Brett Guthrie recently was named a Guardian of Small Business by the National Federation of Independent Business.

    The award is based on the voting record of each member of Congress in support of small business and job creation. The NFIB says it scores legislation relating to small businesses and all representatives scoring above 70 percent are honored.

    Guthrie, a Republican from Warren County who serves the 2nd Congressional District, received a score of 100 percent in the 112th Congress.
