An Elizabethtown man was arrested Sunday after allegedly leaving his sev en-year-old son unattended in a car while he shopped at Big Lots in Elizabethtown. Ryan Hutson, 34, is charged with first-degree wanton endangerment.
According to an arrest citation, Hutson’s son was found alone around noon Sunday by Elizabethtown police in the back seat of the vehicle profusely sweating and unable to open the car door. The car was not running and the windows were left up.
After police instructed the child on how to open the door and gave him water and access to air conditioning, he pointed out his father while he was walking to another store. Hutson was then arrested and lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center.
According to the citation, the child was left in the car for almost 40 minutes. The temperature outside was 78 degrees when police found the boy.
First-degree wanton endangerment is a Class D felony in Kentucky, punishable by one to five years in prison, if convicted.
Hutson is scheduled to appear this morning in Hardin District Court.
