An 8-year-old boy died Saturday morning after being struck by a car while he was checking a roadside mailbox.

A Leitchfield man has been charged with reckless homicide following what Kentucky State Police describe as fatal hit-and-run collision on Ky. 259 south of McDaniels in Breckinridge County.

The Breckinridge County Sheriff's Office asked KSP Post 4 to investigate just after 11:30 a.m. CDT Saturday. A KSP statement said the preliminary investigation revealed a 2009 Pontiac Torrent was traveling north on Ky. 259 when it struck the child standing at the edge of the road.

Police said the driver left the scene but was located by Trooper Brandon Brooks as he was headed to the collision scene, less than 13 minutes after KSP was notified.

Brooks spotted a vehicle matching the description given by witnesses, traveling south on Ky. 737 near the Breckinridge-Grayson county line. The driver was identified as Bradley Mattingly, 35, of Leitchfield.

In addition to reckless homicide, Mattingly is charged with leaving the scene of an accident. He was lodged in the Breckinridge County Detention Center.

The boy's name has not been released by authorities.

Ky. 259 was closed briefly while troopers reconstructed the collision.
