  • Career center coming

    In 2007, when Western Kentucky University acquired land next to Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, WKU President Gary Ransdell said he and university officials were ready to bring another postsecondary facility to Hardin County.

    But 2008 arrived and “we all learned how to spell ‘recession,’” he said. The university’s plan to increase degree productivity in the area was put aside, but he didn’t want to wait years before the General Assembly was willing to approve capital projects.

  • HCS announces partnership with WKU, ECTC, CKCF

    Hardin County Schools announced a partnership today with Western Kentucky University, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, and Central Kentucky Community Foundation that will lead to an early college and career center in the district at a press conference at HCS Central Office.

  • Prepped for preschool: HCS' Readiness Academy begins classes today

    Though the first day of school was many months ago, two local elementary schools will welcome 25 new students today.

    The new Preschool Readiness Academy opened today in Hardin County Schools. The two classrooms, at North Park Elementary School and Heartland Elementary School, serve students who don’t qualify for preschool under state guidelines. The program was approved by the HCS board in December.

  • Kuklinski appointed to EIS board

    Tony Kuklinski started his second term on the Elizabethtown Independent Schools board Tuesday night after receiving an appointment from the Kentucky Department of Education commissioner.

    Kuklinski, who finished his first term on the board in December, missed the filing deadline to run again in the November elections. No one else ran for the seat, which left it to Commissioner Terry Holliday to appoint a board member.

  • EIS approves draft budget

    Elizabethtown Independent Schools began the budget process for next school year.

    The EIS board unanimously approved a Fiscal Year 2014 draft budget of more than $18.8 million at its Tuesday night meeting. The draft is the first step in the budgetary process for the upcoming school year.

    It is intended to give board members an idea of what to expect in the coming fiscal year. It can change throughout the process, which includes two more versions.

  • Partnership may bring career center

    Hardin County Schools, Western Kentucky University, Central Kentucky Community Foundation and Elizabethtown Community and Technical College could be entering into a partnership that would bring the school district land for its proposed early-college and career center.

    If approved by the HCS board and the WKU Board of Regents, the university would transfer 20 acres near Elizabethtown Community and Technical College to the school district, which would provide a location for the center, according to a WKU Board of Regents decision paper.

  • HCS approves draft budget

    Hardin County Schools has begun the budgeting process for the upcoming fiscal year.

    The HCS board approved a draft budget for fiscal year 2014 Thursday at its regular meeting. The draft budget is the first step in the budgeting process and typically provides the board an idea of what to anticipate for the coming fiscal year.

    The draft budget at this point represents the same information as the fiscal year 2013 working budget from which HCS currently is operating. Information will be updated through the budgeting process.

  • Students to earn certificate through JROTC

    Local schools are taking a fresh look at military training as a career foundation.

    High school students who successfully complete a JROTC courseload now receive a certificate of training, which recognizes transferable career skills are taught in the program. The recognition also designates JROTC as a career pathway, allowing it to be included in the college and career readiness portion of Kentucky’s new education accountability model.

  • LaRue grad to study in Jordan

    Thanks to a scholarship given to her and four other Western Kentucky University students, a 2010 graduate of LaRue County High School will be spending several months studying in the Middle East.

    Haley Edwards of Buffalo received a Gilman International Scholarship to study Arabic at Yarmouk University in Irbit, Jordan. Edwards is an English major with a goal of translating classical and modern Arabic literature.

    The senior received the full $5,000 possible for her study abroad trip, as well as an additional $3,000 because she is studying a critical language.

  • Central Hardin to host MLK celebration

    Central Hardin High School is inviting the community to a celebration of civil rights this week.

    The school is hosting a Martin Luther King Jr. celebration at 7 p.m. Thursday in the main gym at the school. It’s the first such event for the school.

    The event features the school’s choir, along with the choir from Heritage International Church in Radcliff. The Rev. Pervis Carter of Victory Faith Christian Center is the featured speaker.
