  • Hart, Creekside recognized for Classroom of Excellence

    Tracie Dupin confessed she was nervous about her son entering preschool.

    “On the first day of school, I admit, I was worried,” she said.

    But she soon learned what the state of Kentucky now knows about the classroom of Samantha Hart at Creekside Elementary School.

    “Ms. Sam, your classroom is excellent,” she told Hart at an awards assembly Tuesday for the teacher.

    Hart was recognized for having a Classroom of Excellence, a distinction given to preschool classes by the Kentucky Department of Education.

  • West Hardin students eat 'dirt,' and love it

    West Hardin Middle School students were told to eat dirt Thursday, and they happily obliged.

    The students continued their lessons on soil by creating an edible and sugary version with a coordinator from the Hardin County Conservation District.

    The lessons on soil were included in their discussions on constructive and destructive forces and types of rock, science teacher Leslie Meredith said. It followed a day of gathering soil samples to view the different layers.

  • HCS proposes redistricting near E’town post office

    Hardin County Schools is proposing redistricting an Elizabethtown neighborhood.

    The HCS board will consider redistricting some neighborhoods near the Elizabethtown Post Office and E-town Swim & Fitness in December.

  • HCS approves 2013-14 academic calendar

    Next year’s Christmas break will stay intact for Hardin County Schools’ students whether it snows or not.

    The 2013-14 school year calendar was approved Thursday night by the HCS board at its regular meeting. The school year will begin Aug. 7 and end May 23.

    The most significant change to the calendar involves the winter break in December and January. The break for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 calendars have included makeup days to use in case of snow closures during the year. The break for the 2013-14 calendar doesn’t include makeup days.

  • Sheeran named Outstanding Administrator in field

    After watching her department receive recognition recently, Carlena Sheeran received her own early childhood accolade.

    Sheeran, early childhood director at Hardin County Schools since 2007, has been named Outstanding Administrator of the Year by the Kentucky Association for Early Childhood Education.

    The award was presented to Sheeran at a conference held by the association earlier this month, without her knowledge she was nominated by some of her colleagues.

  • College honors Distinguished Alumni

    The local community college took an evening to recognize and honor the successes of past graduates, who have entered into fields ranging from medicine to military service.

    Ten former Elizabethtown Community and Technical College students were inducted Monday into the college’s Hall of Distinguished Alumni at a ceremony in the Regional Postsecondary Education Center.

  • New building unites St. James classes

    St. James Regional Catholic School has been one school with two homes for many years, but on Monday, all students came together under one roof.

    The school began its first day in its new school building after students and staff took a two-week break to move into the building on Robinbrooke Boulevard in Elizabethtown. Assistant Principal Shellee Godfrey said the first day went smoothly aside from “a few hiccups.”

    “It sort of feels like the first day of school for us today,” she said.

  • EIS' French sets June retirement

    Gary French never expected to have a long career as superintendent of Elizabethtown Independent Schools, saying he planned to serve only one contract.

    He made it official he will do just that and retire at the end of the school year. The next superintendent will be the district’s fifth in the last eight years.

    French informed EIS board members a few weeks ago, he said, and held a staff meeting to make the announcement at the end of last week.

  • EIS earns accreditation

    Elizabethtown Independent School District is one of seven school systems in Kentucky to be recognized for achieving voluntary system accreditation through the AdvancED/Southern Association of Colleges and Schools accreditation process.

    The Kentucky Department of Education announced the achievement last week.

    Accreditation is a voluntary method of quality assurance for schools and districts.
