  • Preschools named Classrooms of Excellence

    Preschool in Hardin County Schools continues to be recognized for “excellence.”

    Preschool teachers Erin McPherson and Zola Walker received Classroom of Excellence distinctions from the Kentucky Department of Education, giving Hardin County Schools four preschool classrooms recognized with the honor.

  • North Hardin to host Night of the Arts

    North Hardin High School faculty and students are hoping to bring a love of the arts to Hardin County.

    North Hardin is hosting its first Night of the Arts from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the school cafeteria. The event features visual arts and musical and dramatic performances, all from students.

    The school has sponsored concerts and theater productions before, but faculty members in the fine arts department were looking for a new event to showcase all facets of the arts, said James Beard, head of the fine arts department.

  • HCS debates districts

    Shifts in population could result in Hardin County Schools redistricting by the 2013-2014 school year.

    During an HCS school board working session Friday, Associate Superintendent Bobby Lewis offered several areas of possible redistricting, which he said will be posted on the district’s website.

    Because the meeting was a work session, the proposals were only discussed. No decisions were made. The school system also plans to schedule public meetings to explain any change before implementation.

  • HCS ready to move forward with career center

    After making an educational trip to a Scott County technical and vocational school, Hardin County School Board members said Friday they are ready to proceed in developing the district’s college and career center.

    Over the last nine months, administrators have researched and conducted meetings regarding development of a vocational center for HCS students, said Mark Kopp, assistant superintendent for instruction. Scott County’s Elkhorn Crossing School is one of several institutions across the state HCS officials have visited.

  • HCS unveils new vegetarian lunches

    Samantha Herbig is a vegetarian, but until recently, school lunches were a challenge for the North Hardin High School junior.

    Herbig opted for a vegetarian diet last year after watching a YouTube video about how animals are slaughtered.

    “It is part of what turned me away from meat,’’ she said.

  • Outing introduces innovative career-focused school

    GEORGETOWN — A collection of more than two-dozen community and business leaders took an educational field trip Thursday to explore one of Kentucky’s more innovative schools.

    Elkhorn Crossing School near Georgetown offers technical and vocational training to more than 600 teenagers in an environment known for high expectations. Arranged by Hardin County Schools and the North Central Education Foundation, the trip sought to collect more insight and involvement in developing a similar program locally.

  • LaRue students head to D.C. for rocket competition

    Students at LaRue County High School hope to launch themselves into first place at an upcoming national competition.

    The students compete May 12 in the national finals of the Team America Rocketry Challenge near Washington, D.C. The students have built rockets and qualified for the finals competition and are readying themselves for next weekend’s final launches.

    Junior Ryan Hornback found the competition online before Christmas and brought the idea to physics teacher Rex Hanson and his classmates.

  • John Hardin High School undergoes transformation for prom

    The prom theme for John Hardin High School, “The Clock Strikes Midnight,” was an appropriate one. Because like Cinderella, who had only a short time for her transformation for the ball before all of her finery disappeared, the school building had to undergo a magical makeover, too.

  • ECTC students to study abroad this summer

    Students at the local community college will travel far from Hardin County to continue their studies this summer.

    Three students at Elizabethtown Community and Technical College plan to study abroad while faculty member Jim Murley will be traveling to teach courses for a study abroad program. Murley has been working to expand the study abroad program at the college.

  • Muldraugh dreads the final bell

    Muldraugh parents comforted by knowing their children were just minutes away during the school day are struggling to adjust to the news that next year that won’t be the case.

    Muldraugh Elementary School is closing at the end of the school year, along with Battletown Elementary School northwest of Brandenburg, and Muldraugh residents are reeling from the news that their community school is closing.
