  • Clark hired as Lakewood principal

    Lakewood Elementary School has one of its own taking the helm this school year.

    Shelee Clark has taken the job of principal after serving as assistant principal at the school for a little more than a year.

    Clark replaces Kerry Reeves, who retired in August. Clark has held a variety of positions in the Hardin County Schools district and taught at Lakewood for five years.

    Clark worked closely with Reeves during her time as assistant principal, she said. Reeves believed all administrators should know what principal duties entail, she said.

  • HCS names new instruction directors

    An elementary school principal is moving to Hardin County Schools’ Central Office as its new director of elementary curriculum and instruction.

    Teresa Morgan, principal at Woodland Elementary School, begins the new job the first on next month.

    Tammy Stephens also recently began a similar job for secondary schools.

    Directors assist schools with issues such as testing and implementing standards for curriculum, among other things.

  • HCS board wants to keep same tax rate

    Hardin County Schools board members discussed keeping the district’s tax rates steady Wednesday at a special meeting.

    HCS and Elizabethtown Independent Schools will vote in coming weeks on new tax rates for the year.

    EIS will host a forum for the member to discuss the proposed rate at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the district’s Central Office, followed by a regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m., where a rate could be approved.

  • ECA selects new principal

    Elizabethtown Christian Academy will have a new leader at the beginning of next month.

    Willie Dean Thomas, a retired chemistry teacher at LaRue County High School, has been hired as the new principal of the private school.

    Thomas began her teaching career in Hardin County Schools and went to LaRue County in 1994. Along with her time at the high school, she also served as an assistant principal at LaRue County Middle School.

  • JHHS has top graduation rate among local schools

    John Hardin High School had the highest graduation rate among the five local high schools in 2010, according to recently released data from the Kentucky Department of Education. JHHS was one of three schools that improved from last year’s rates.

    John Hardin also had two subpopulations, black and Asian students, rate a perfect 100 percent.

  • Thomas selected as WHMS principal

    A former West Hardin Middle School staff member is returning as the new leader of the building.

    Jon Thomas, principal of Ekron Elementary School in Meade County, has been selected as the new principal of West Hardin Middle School.

    Former principal Jim Roe has retired, and David Reed, a former principal in the district, is serving in an interim role until Thomas begins. That date hasn’t been determined.

  • Becky Bauer begins the end of her teaching career

    Becky Bauer practiced writing her name in cursive with brand new students Wednesday, showing them how to spell it and how each letter is formed. Their heads bent over their papers to copy her example. It was likely the last time a class will learn how to spell her name.

    Bauer returned to G.C. Burkhead Elementary School on Wednesday for her 24th and final year as a teacher on a prospect she has considered for some time and not in a completely pleasant way.

    Bauer said it was “like mourning a death or something.”

  • Teacher starts first day of education career

    Brandon Thompson didn’t realize that placing the names of his students on their desks would take almost an hour, or that arranging desks and getting them in order for the first day of school would take most of a day. This is Thompson’s first rodeo when it comes to desk-wrangling, and for teaching in general.

  • Regional Education Center showcases its offerings

    It’s one-stop education shopping in Radcliff.
    The postsecondary institutions at the Regional Education Center held a Community Education Fair as a way to introduce the community to local scholarly options.
    Along with booths set up for local institutions, each school offered sessions Wednesday for community members to sample what they offer. Children could sit in on music and art classes while adults could learn about topics such as Internet safety, Facebook use and acquiring money for college.
