• Nominations sought for HCS Distinguished Alumni

    Hardin County Schools is accepting applications for its 2013 class of Distinguished Alumni.

    To nominate a Hardin County Schools graduate, go to the Hardin County Schools website, www.hardin.k12.ky.us. The link to the nomination form is on the front page of the district’s website.

    Nominees must have graduated from any of the current or former Hardin County Schools no less than five years ago. The 2013 class will be honored Aug. 29 at the Historic State Theater in downtown Elizabethtown.

  • Get Ready! Camp to start next week

    The school year has ended, but a summer of learning awaits the youngest community members.

    Get Ready! Camp, an educational program for children from birth through age 5 and their parents, begins at 11 a.m. Monday at three sites in Hardin County. The program is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, through June 28. The camp is at G.C. Burkhead Elementary School in Elizabethtown, North Park Elementary School in Radcliff and Van Voorhis Elementary School on Fort Knox.

  • Bicycles donated to elementary students of military families

    Several students at Meadow View Elementary School received gifts of appreciation this week for the parts they play in military families.

    Texas Roadhouse gave 25 students free bicycles Wednesday as a way to thank students for the sacrifices they make as part of military families.

  • Principal won't return to New Highland

    Mark Thomas will not return as principal at New Highland Elementary School. His last day of paid suspension was Friday, according to John Wright, community relations director for Hardin County Schools.

    Thomas was suspended with pay May 14 while district officials investigated alleged wrongdoing at the school.

  • John Hardin assistant principal hired at Hart County

    Greg Cecil, assistant principal at John Hardin High School, has been hired as the principal at Hart County High School.

    The district considered more than 30 applicants, Superintendent Ricky D. Line said. Cecil was one of three finalists interviewed by the site-based council. Line said extensive background research and reference checks were conducted.

    "We're very comfortable with his style and where he's been," Line said. "We think he will be a great fit."

  • EIS approves tentative budget

    Elizabethtown Independent Schools are weathering tight financial times with the district’s savings.

    The EIS board approved the district’s tentative budget Monday night at its regular meeting at Panther Academy. The budget shows the district spending more out of its general fund than it’s taking in, but a hefty contingency and starting balance in the budget allows the move, according to Finance Director Denise Morgan.

    Shuffling through family photos, Berna Hester says one can be found of her in the yard of her home in Harlan. Cardboard boxes are scattered around the grass and children are sitting at them as if they were desks while she stands in the front of what is a makeshift classroom.

    “When I was 3 years old, my favorite thing to play was school,” she said.

    Decades later, school still is one of her favorite things.
