  • State improvement plans detail goals for local schools

    Area schools and districts have joined with those across the state in planning ways to help students learn and improve test results.

    All schools and districts were required late last week to submit plans to the state Department of Education to meet ambitious new goals on the K-PREP student test.

  • JTA's Evans is named HCS ExCEL winner

    Looking at the names of winners of the WHAS-11 ExCEL Award was so overwhelming, said school middle school music teacher Kim Root Evans, it brought tears to her eyes.

    “How is my name on this list?” she wondered.

    But it indeed is on the list, as Evans on Monday was named 2013 ExCEL award winner.

  • Burglary suspect dies in standoff with police

    A suspect in a police standoff died Wednesday just hours after Radcliff investigators responded to his Seminole Road apartment to interview him about a burglary.

    Officials did not release the man’s name Wednesday night. Because Radcliff police are involved in the shooting, Kentucky State Police will handle the investigation.

  • Search for EIS superintendent begins in February

    The process of selecting a new superintendent for the Elizabethtown Independent Schools district begins in full next month.

    The district is close to finalizing its screening committee in the search for a new superintendent.

    Parents are voting for the final member of the committee — a minority parent representative — today, said Cora Wood, director of personnel, in an email.

  • Cooper ends longtime service on school board

    When the Elizabethtown Independent Schools board met last week, it marked the end of a decade and a half of service for one of its former members.

    The EIS meeting was the first in 16 years that didn’t include Dianne Cooper as a board member. After serving on the board since 1997, Cooper chose to end her tenure and didn’t seek re-election.

    Cooper admitted it seemed strange to know the five-member board was meeting without her.

  • Career center coming

    In 2007, when Western Kentucky University acquired land next to Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, WKU President Gary Ransdell said he and university officials were ready to bring another postsecondary facility to Hardin County.

    But 2008 arrived and “we all learned how to spell ‘recession,’” he said. The university’s plan to increase degree productivity in the area was put aside, but he didn’t want to wait years before the General Assembly was willing to approve capital projects.

  • HCS announces partnership with WKU, ECTC, CKCF

    Hardin County Schools announced a partnership today with Western Kentucky University, Elizabethtown Community and Technical College, and Central Kentucky Community Foundation that will lead to an early college and career center in the district at a press conference at HCS Central Office.

  • Prepped for preschool: HCS' Readiness Academy begins classes today

    Though the first day of school was many months ago, two local elementary schools will welcome 25 new students today.

    The new Preschool Readiness Academy opened today in Hardin County Schools. The two classrooms, at North Park Elementary School and Heartland Elementary School, serve students who don’t qualify for preschool under state guidelines. The program was approved by the HCS board in December.
