  • Trash can fire at J.C. Penney ruled arson

    The cause of a fire that damaged a stock room at the J.C. Penney department store in Towne Mall on Sunday afternoon had not been determined as of Monday afternoon, but Elizabethtown fire officials have ruled an earlier fire that broke out in a trash can in the ladies restroom is arson.

  • Nolin, KU assisting with Irene recovery

    Long before Hurricane Irene trekked along the eastern seaboard and inland over the last several days, Nolin RECC Vice President of System Operations Vince Heuser was helping prepare areas expected to be battered by a Category 1 storm.

    “Since it came through the Bahamas, we’ve been part of the planning on conference calls,’” Heuser said. “As it got closer, we got word on where we would be going. By the time a storm is maturing, we’re in talks of where we’ll be helping or if we’ll be receiving help.’”

  • E'town boy recovering after hit-and-run incident

    The 7-year-old boy injured in a hit-and-run incident last Friday morning in Elizabethtown is recovering.

    An unidentified driver of a white, four-door car struck the child at 6:39 a.m. Friday near the 1200 block of Woodland Drive and did not stop to help, according to witnesses. The white car fled, heading north on Woodland Drive.

    After being treated at Hardin Memorial Hospital, the child was taken by ambulance to Kosair Children’s Hospital, according to the Elizabethtown Police Department.

  • Fitness camp coming to State Theater

    A local site known for films could soon be known for fitness, too.

    Kimberly Brockway, an in-home personal trainer and head of Renewal Fitness, is partnering with the Historic State Theater to offer a fitness boot camp beginning in September.

    The first class is Sept. 7. The class meets from 7:15 to 8 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in the First Federal Gallery at the theater. The fee for the class is $60 a month.

    State Theater Director Emily West wanted to implement a fitness class at the theater to appeal to a new group in the community.

  • Leitchfield man arraigned in district court

    A Leitchfield man accused of stalking and stabbing a man in front of the alleged victim’s wife and children was arraigned Monday in Hardin District Court.

    Steven D. Wilson, 38, is lodged at the Hardin County Detention Center in lieu of a $250,000 cash bond. His next court date will be a preliminary hearing Sept. 12.

    He is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree stalking and five counts of first-degree wanton endangerment after allegedly striking James Hodge, 28, with a punch knife and crowbar at the victim’s Summit residence Friday night.

  • Today is last chance to register for wet/dry elections

    The window is narrowing for residents of Elizabethtown, Radcliff and Vine Grove who wish to vote in the Oct. 4 wet/dry elections but have not registered.

    The final day to register for the election in the three cities is Sept. 6, Hardin County Clerk Kenny Tabb said.

    Residents can register at the Hardin County Clerk’s Office in downtown Elizabethtown or the Radcliff office at 210 Freedom Way.

    Residents currently registered do not have to register again, Tabb has said.

  • Army gives soldiers, vets second chance at Purple Heart

    Soldiers who suffered traumatic brain injury or concussion injuries during the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are encouraged by the U.S. Army to submit paperwork for reconsideration for a Purple Heart.

    The policy also allows veterans once rejected for a Purple Heart to reapply for consideration.

  • Four arrested at police checkpoint

    Several Hardin County law enforcement agencies participated in drunken driving checkpoint Saturday night that yielded four DUI arrests.

    West Point, Radcliff and Elizabethtown police departments participated, as did Kentucky State Police, Hardin County Sheriff’s Office and Hardin County Detention Center, West Point Chief Butch Curl said.

    The checkpoint was set up on Dixie Highway in West Point and officers were out there from midnight until 4 a.m., Curl said.

  • Aspiring super hero raises money for hospital after 65 surgeries

    Jennifer Aberl gaped in horror at her 8-year-old son when he said he hopes to make it to 100 surgeries.

    Shawn Aberl II, a third-grader at New Highland Elementary School, already has experienced more than 60 surgeries.

    His parents aren’t sure exactly how many there have been, but the boy counts 65. He thinks 100 is a good number.

    Jennifer and her husband, Shawn, both sergeants first class with the U.S. Army Human Resource Command, did not know until their son’s birth that anything was wrong.
