  • Civil War ghosts appear for downtown visitors

    The streets of Elizabethtown were walked Friday night by visions from the past, all sent from a time when the city was caught in the War Between the States.

    The second run of the Civil War Ghosts and Legends Drama took place downtown. Groups walked through scenes of the past that included Abraham Lincoln, Kentucky Gov. John Helm and Gen. John Hunt Morgan.

    Many participating actors have been part of the Charlie Logsdon Downtown Walking Tour as well, including Steve and Lisa Lindsey, who portrayed Gov. and Mrs. Helm.

  • Doobie Brothers, Kansas rock Godman Airfield

    Illness and weather might have caused some snags, but when Saturday night rolled around, the people were ready for some music.

    Thousands filled Godman Army Air Field at Fort Knox on Saturday to see classic rock groups Kansas and the Doobie Brothers take the stage. Kansas was a last-minute replacement for southern rock group Lynyrd Skynyrd. The band had to pull out of the performance after an illness sidelined lead singer Johnny Van Zant.

  • Cecliia celebrates music, food, tractors at annual festival

    Visitors flocked to Cecilia Baptist Church this weekend to take part in the sights and sounds of Cecilia Days.

    Children played games for prizes and rode on a miniature train, while others perused a crafts table, ate a meal of barbecued chicken or took in a show from one of the performing musicians.

    Hannah Woosley, 6, and her mother, Kelly Woosley, were working on a sand art necklace for Hannah. Kelly Woosley said they try to go to the festival every year.

  • GPS tracks down car, theft suspect

    Modern technology played a major role Thursday in tracking down a man suspected of stealing a vehicle from the local State Transportation Cabinet office on South Dixie Avenue.

    Mark Vera, 32, was arrested and charged with burglary, criminal mischief and theft by unlawful taking of a vehicle more than $500 when he was found sitting in the stolen SUV in Shelbyville.

    A GPS tracking device in the Ford Escape led authorities to the exact location of the vehicle. Authorities not only were able to find the car, but the man who stole it, they say.

  • LaRue man charged for meth, marijuana

    A Magnolia man was arrested Thursday on charges of marijuana cultivation and manufacturing methamphetamine.

    Willis A. Richardson, 39, was taken to the LaRue County Jail after Kentucky State Police assisted with a welfare check on children at a residence on Cruse Road, according to a KSP news release. Police said they found a marijuana plant and evidence of meth labs at the site.

  • Library board supports forming unified government commission

    A county board has expressed support for a proposal to develop a unified government in Hardin County.

    The Hardin County Public Library Board of Trustees approved a resolution calling for the establishment of the unification review commission to develop a plan for a unified government.

    If formed, the commission will develop a plan for a unified government to be presented to voters. November 2012 is the target date for a vote.

    The library board is the first community organization to openly support the moving to the next step of the process.

  • CrossWay celebrates 10th anniversary

    It took Maureen Wilcox a long time to move on after having an abortion at age 19.
    “I never thought about the baby as a baby, and the first time I thought of my baby as a baby, I thought of myself as a murderer,” she said.
    Wilcox, a Vine Grove resident, turned to alcohol to escape the feeling. She said that led to bad choices, including a failed marriage.
    “I wanted something to take away the pain,” she said. “It didn’t work.”

  • Site makes geneaology easier

    Genealogy researchers can find out where their ancestors lived, if they’re related to Revolutionary War soldiers and the answers to many other questions from their own homes.

    The Hardin County Public Library system introduced last month a new genealogical database that can be accessed remotely.

    Library employees offer HeritageQuest Online to make genealogical research easier and reduce patrons’ need to travel, said Kim Bland, adult services librarian for the branch in Elizabethtown.
