  • Dinner fit for Lions

    County residents found a tasty way to support the community Saturday at Elizabethtown High School.
    The Elizabethtown Lions Club hosted its 69th annual chicken barbecue to support causes and charities the organization has supported during its 70 years serving the community.
    The main service the club supports is offering free vision screenings to children and making screenings and glasses available to people who can’t afford them.
    The smell of chicken wafted through the air as James and Vickie Flood, of Radcliff, ate their meals.

  • Guests support clinic through food, art

    Taste of the Heartland and art auction sold a lot of tickets to supporters of the Community Clinic of Hardin and LaRue Counties in Elizabethtown.

    Some of the purchasers of the more than 200 tickets sold chose not to attend the Friday event at the Historic State Theater, which is typical, said Jane Cornell, executive director for the clinic.

    Some people buy the $50 tickets only to support the cause, helping to reach the $40,000 goal from ticket sales and art auction needed to keep the free clinic going, she said.

  • Sex offender arrested on rape, incest charges

    A convicted Michigan sex offender was arrested Thursday afternoon at his Tunnel Hill Road residence in Elizabethtown by Kentucky State Police and charged with first-degree rape and incest.

    David Brian Dunnivant, 45, is accused of forcibly raping an adult female relative, according to police.

    Norm Chaffins, KSP public affairs officer, said the arrest came after state police received a phone call from Hardin Memorial Hospital, reporting a patient who claimed she had been raped. The arrest citation listed Wednesday as the date of the allegation.

  • Traffic blocked on 31W

    A crane that has fallen on a power line on U.S. 31W near the Hardin County Schools bus garage is causing a traffic issue into Elizabethtown and Radcliff.

    Radcliff Police public information officer Bryce Shumate said traffic is blocked in all four lanes.

    Drivers should avoid the area for now, or seek an alternate route. Traffic is being detoured on Ky. 220 and onto Wilson Road.

  • Area police participate in anti drunken driving campaign

    Eight Kentucky motorists died in traffic crashes during the Labor Day holiday period in 2010, according to statistics from the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety.

    Of the eight, two were alcohol-related traffic deaths.

    In a statewide campaign, the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety is partnering with law enforcement agencies to crack down on impaired driving.

    Multiple police agencies throughout Hardin County are participating in the effort, which began Friday and continues through Sept. 5.

  • Woman to meet pen pal after 56 years

    One of Jane Link’s best and oldest friends lives nearly 4,000 miles away.

    A White Mills resident, Link has spoken to her friend on the telephone only one time since they met by mail in 1955. On Thursday, they will be in the same room for the first time.

    “I’m really excited, and she is, too” Link said, grinning. “We send letters back and forth, but it’s not like seeing her.”

  • Magistrates weigh in on unification concept

    Hardin Fiscal Court will be the first government body to meet with Hardin County United officials about creation of a unification review commission.

    Magistrates last week did not endorse the concept of unification, but many said they believe voters should have the right to choose.

    The review commission, which could be formed to draft a government charter, must have the county’s consent because state law requires at least one city to merge with a county to form a unified local government.

  • Renovations planned for Black History Gallery

    Those wanting to visit the Emma Reno Connor Black History Gallery in Elizabethtown have about two weeks left to do so before an extended break.

    The gallery will undergo a major renovation beginning Labor Day. The work will run through about Nov. 18, said Andrea Jackson, niece of the late Charles Connor, who opened the gallery in 1989.

    Jackson said the gallery is in need of several interiors repairs.

    “We just want it to look a little better inside than it does right now,’’ she said.
