  • Army Reserve Readiness Training Center to uncase flag Friday

    One of the last cogs in the Base Realignment and Closure machine for Fort Knox will arrive Friday.

    The Army Reserve Readiness Training Center will uncase its flag at 10:30 a.m. at its official headquarters in Gaffey Hall on Old Ironsides Avenue. The ceremony is open to the public.

  • HCU tackles concerns about unification

    Hardin Circuit Judge Ken Howard told a roomful of elected officials Wednesday that Hardin County is in an age of prosperity and growth, which is the perfect time to consider looking at a unified local government.

    Without a crisis hanging over their heads or their backs against the wall, a more reasoned and careful examination of unification can be taken, he said.

    “We’re not bouncing checks that I know of,” he said of Hardin County’s successes.

  • County clerk verifies Y.E.S. petitions

    Some Hardin County residents will have a chance to vote on expanding alcohol sales this fall.

    Hardin County Clerk Kenny Tabb confirmed Wednesday that Yes for Economic Success had reached the number of needed signatures in Elizabethtown, Radcliff and Vine Grove to force three local option elections.

    “All three cities had the necessary number of signatures,” Tabb said Wednesday evening. “In fact, we went beyond what they needed in their count.”

  • Probable cause found in deadly I-65 crash

    The faint sound of a woman speaking Spanish filled the lulls in questioning at Wednesday’s probable cause hearing for Arturo Rodriguez Martinez, an illegal immigrant charged with murder and driving under the influence.

    The sound originated from a set of headphones that covered Martinez’s ears. It stopped only when Hardin District Judge John Simcoe declared the commonwealth met the burden of probable cause.

  • Vine Grove council member speaks against unification

    Vine Grove City Council member Garry McCoy won’t attend meetings scheduled this week to discuss unifying local governments in Hardin County.

    He spoke during the council’s monthly meeting Monday when Mayor Blake Proffitt asked council members if they had been invited to an informational session scheduled for today to help explain the proposal to elected officials.

  • First day can be harder for those new to elementary, middle or high school

    As Kim Crowder called out colors, the children circled around her feet happily responded back with “I have orange on!” or “Call green!” Crowder, a kindergarten teacher at Howevalley Elementary School, was showing students how to line up to leave the classroom and was choosing them by the color of their clothes.

    They weren’t technically students yet, however; Crowder and her fellow kindergarten teachers were working with incoming kindergartners July 27 to prepare them for the first day of school today as part of a program called Kindercamp.

  • Y.E.S. submits petitions for alcohol vote

    Yes for Economic Success has submitted its petitions to Hardin County Clerk Kenny Tabb, hoping a confirmation follows so a local option election for expanded alcohol sales can be scheduled in Elizabethtown, Radcliff and Vine Grove by fall.

    Tabb on Tuesday said a ruling could come as early as today.

    Tabb’s staff received the petitions last week and has been meticulously reviewing the signatures ever since, using as many as seven people to verify the names are legitimate, he said.

  • Governor visits troops in Iraq

    Gov. Steve Beshear spent Tuesday in body armor and a Kevlar helmet.

    He and the governors of Nevada, Tennessee and Utah were in Kuwait and Iraq visiting members of the military stationed in Iraq and being briefed about the war.

    Beshear said during a telephone news conference on Tuesday afternoon, 9:30 p.m. in Kuwait, that he has had to order troops into dangerous situations as commander-in-chief of the Kentucky National Guard.
