  • RPD officer charged with Internet crimes

    A 15-year veteran of the Radcliff Police Department resigned Tuesday after he was suspended without pay following his arrest on five counts of computer solicitation of a minor.

    Lt. David Eugene Williams, 37, was arrested at the police station on Freedoms Way in Radcliff at 10 p.m. Monday. An undercover operation that started in September with police in Brevard County in Florida ended with his arrest.

  • Businesses go purple for cancer awareness

    Tobé Poynter, owner of Mulberry Florist in Elizabethtown, knows many of her customers have been touched by cancer.

    “It’s close to a lot of families,” she said.

    She and her sister, who works with her, are glad their mother beat the disease 11 years ago. That victory made them eager to sign up for Paint the Town Purple, an event organized by Relay For Life.

    “Cancer doesn’t discriminate,” Poynter said. “I feel like this is something we should be involved in.’’

  • Bennett sentenced to 15 years for park attack

    A man charged with two separate crimes at Freeman Lake Park was sentenced to prison Tuesday.

    Kenneth R. Bennett was sentenced to 15 years in prison for attempting to rape a woman in Freeman Lake Park in August 2010.

    Bennett also pleaded guilty to second-degree arson in 2009 for a fire that damaged the Lincoln Heritage House in the same park. The 15-year sentence will run consecutively with a 10-year sentence he received for the arson charge.

  • Dipietro gets 30 years for attack on woman

    A Sonora man with a “high risk” to re-offend was sentenced to 30 years in prison Tuesday for an attack on an elderly Sonora woman last July.

    Edward L. Dipietro was charged with sodomy, burglary and robbery for breaking into the home of a 70-year-old woman in Sonora and forced oral sex on her. Dipietro was convicted of first-degree rape in the 1990s and is a registered sex offender.

  • Poplar Drive residents urge action to curb drainage woes

    Betty Long was apologetic Monday.

    Addressing Elizabethtown City Council for the second time in three weeks, the longtime Poplar Drive resident told city officials she was foolish to habitually vote for elected officials without keeping an eye on their actions.

    “Whether you like it or not, we’re your boss,” she said.

  • Magazine names E'town area among best in nation for jobs

    The area has earned a new economic recognition.

    The Elizabethtown Metropolitan Statistical Area ranks 16th in the nation when an online journal of information related to urban issues, New Geography, posted its annual ranking of the best cities for new jobs. The rankings included all 398 statistical areas for which the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports monthly employment data.

    Rankings were based on the current and prior year’s employment growth rates, mid-term growth, long-term trends and momentum and current year growth.

  • Man charged with abuse of a child

    RADCLIFF — A Radcliff man was arrested Monday afternoon and charged with first-degree sexual abuse of a child.
    Hayden Nicholas Mitchell, 27, was arrested and is lodged in the Hardin County Detention Center on a $25,000 cash bond.
    According to a Radcliff Police Department news release, Mitchell was sleeping in a bed with a 6-year-old female and is accused of placing a hand on the child’s private parts.

    CKE Restaurants Inc., parent company of Carl’s Jr. and Hardee’s restaurants, recently launched its Stars for Troops campaign to benefit military charities Homes for Our Troops and USA Cares.

  • Man dies from injuries in shooting

    A Tennessee man shot during an altercation last month at a convenience store in Elizabethtown died Monday morning in Louisville.

    Su Hong Springer, 53, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., died at 4:52 a.m. Monday, according to Elizabethtown Police Department spokesman Virgil Willoughby.

    Springer had been at University Hospital since the shooting.

    Police say road rage on Interstate 65 spurred the April 17 shooting.
