  • St. Baldrick's event: Will shave head for cash

    Bald can be especially beautiful when it’s optional and done for a cause.

    Just ask any of the 50 Hardin County residents — including one female — planning to shave their heads at this unique fundraiser scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 1851 Leitchfield Road, Elizabethtown.

  • New farmers get training in year-long series

    Everything area producers wanted to know about farming but were afraid to ask is available at the Hardin County Extension Service.

    The service began last month with a year-long series called FarmStart, designed to provide people who have farmed for fewer than 10 years with tips and tricks to be successful.

    The series costs $100, and the next session is at 8 a.m. Friday at the Extension Service in Elizabethtown. The following session won’t take place until mid-June to give farmers time to handle spring planting.

    As usual, the Black History Gallery opened its doors to visitors on Saturdays in February, and as usual, Brenda Tucker was on hand greeting guests. But Tucker and her husband, Ralph, also were looking for problems around the house, little issues that needed to be addressed.

  • LaRue woman set to compete in Mrs. America competition

    Mrs. Kentucky America Kristi Gowen Riggs visited last week with the owners of My Gal Boutique and MAM Candy.

    Riggs was there – in gown and tiara – to film a promotion for a benefit fashion show at LaRue County High School. The fashion show was sponsored in part by the businesses.

  • Hosparus hopes to raised $20,000 from today's tea

    One of Hosparus of Central Kentucky’s premier fundraisers returns to Elizabethtown this weekend. Hosparus is hosting its annual tea and auction at Severns Valley Baptist Church on Ring Road is from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday. The event is titled “Arts and Humaniteas.”

    Lisa Sanford, director of advancement and community relations at Hosparus, said Wednesday that only two tables and a handful of tickets still were available for the event at a cost of $30.

  • Work on I-65 bridge requires lane closure

    As interstate rehabilitation through Hart, LaRue and Hardin counties continues, crews are scheduled to begin bridge work in north and southbound directions at mile-point 88.3  Sunday in Hardin County.

    Placement of temporary barrier walls will begin at 8 p.m. EDT and will require closure of the outside lane in each direction. By the end of the week, work will shift to the inner lane each direction as traffic is switched to the outer lane each direction. Work on the Rhudes Creek twin bridges should be completed by mid-morning March 31.

  • Veterans Tribute: Sailor sculpture comes to life

    Rich Griendling is never at a loss for work.

    The Elizabethtown sculptor on Tuesday unveiled the second clay mold for the Hardin County Veterans Tribute at his studio, which depicts a black U.S. Navy sailor in a contemporary uniform.

    Griendling said the iconic “Cracker Jack” image has remained for the Navy uniform over the years, so he stayed true to authentic apparel.

  • Departments expect impact from fuel price increase

    All Hardin County residents are feeling the sting of increased prices at the pumps. The people who regularly roll around in fire trucks, ambulances and other government vehicles are facing added challenges.

    Hardin County Emergency and Medical Services will have to budget during the next fiscal year about 20 percent more for diesel than the organization set aside this year, said David Underwood, administrator for the organization and the Emergency Management Department in Hardin County.
