A dog bred locally won big at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show this week.

Bronze Grand Champion FlamingStar The Lion King, a chow chow owned by Phil and Vicki DeGruy of Janesville, Wisconsin, and bred by Cathy Clapp of Hodgenville, showed Monday.

Clapp is an active participant in dog shows and serves as president of Mid-Kentucky Kennel Club in Elizabethtown.

The 7-year-old dog, also knows as Neo, was born in Hodgenville. He won Best of Breed and moved on to Non-Sporting Group Competition in the international acclaimed program. He placed third in the non-sporting group.

“As a breeder, more than anything, we want our puppies to have long, happy lives,” Clapp said. “Neo is continuing that and will still be an excellent ambassador for the breed at their local meet the breed events.”

She said she is proud of the owners and the dog.

“With this win, Vicki (who also handles the dog) and Neo are both retiring from the show ring, having accomplished more than I ever imagined when he left my house at 10 weeks,” she said.
