Area philanthropists will get a chance to participate in a day of giving to local causes on May 14.

Kentucky Gives Day is a 24-hour opportunity to contribute to nonprofits in the area.

Central Kentucky Community Foundation locally sponsors the effort. The Kentucky Nonprofit Network is the statewide host.

Last year, the initiative raised more than $114,000 in the 24-hour fundraising blitz, foundation President and CEO Davette Swiney said.

The event begins at midnight May 14 and continues until 11:59 p.m.

In the nine-county region, 25 nonprofit organizations are registered to participate.

Helping Hand of Hope Executive Director Gary Bohannon said Kentucky Gives Day has been a big help to nonprofits.

“The Central Kentucky Community Foundation and the Kentucky Gives Day organizers have provided us with some excellent tools and training on how to use social media to raise awareness and support for our ministry,” he said. “Kentucky Gives Day provides a cost-effective way for us and other non-profits to connect with current supporters and reach out to new supporters to raise funding for the crucial services we provide for people in need.”

He’s confident this will be another successful year.

Silverleaf Sexual Trauma Recovery Services Executive Director Jillian Carden said Kentucky Gives Day is important in their cause and for others.

“As members of the Kentucky Nonprofit Network and, as a result, being able to participate in Kentucky Gives Day, we are also able to bring awareness to our organization,” she said. “For Silverleaf, it is at the forefront of our mission to make sure that survivors of sexual violence and our community partners know that our services are free and we are available.”

Participation in Kentucky Gives Day is another way to reach out.

“The other way Kentucky Gives Day helps our organization is that it offers another avenue for fundraising,” she said. “Thanks to the Central Kentucky Community Foundation and KNN, there is a great way for individuals to research local organizations in their community and donate to those causes that are important to them.”

The community foundation will host a Leaderboard Power Lunch Hour from noon to 1 p.m. May 14 at Topp’t in Elizabethtown to promote the day of giving.
