The annual Light Up Hodgenville event sponsored by the LaRue County Chamber of Commerce and the City of Hodgenville is on tap for 6 p.m. today.

This year the Christmas tree on the square will appear a little different.

“The tree that we used last year is around 12- or 14-years-old and it is just about shot,” Mayor Jim Phelps said.

The tree used in previous years hangs on a wire frame, which has needed several repairs and has suffered damage to many of the ornaments.

“A new tree like that is in the neighborhood of $10,000 to $12,000, so we decided to do something a little different this year,” Phelps said.

At 4 p.m. the square in downtown Hodgenville is closed to allow for the setup of this year’s Light Up festivities.

At 6 p.m. the city’s first Christmas parade makes its way down Main Street to downtown Hodgenville. Festivities on the square include free carriage rides and appearances from the Grinch and Cindy Lou Who, Frozen characters Elsa, Anna and Olaf and of course Santa and Mrs. Claus.

Attendees have the chance to listen to the LaRue County High School’s Christmas Brass Trumpet Trio play the National Anthem, and singing from the elementary school Holiday Singers and the LaRue County High School Choir.

The annual Woman’s Club of Hodgenville holiday cookie sale takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. in conjunction with the event. The sale continues from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The Woman’s Club building is at 19 Lincoln Square in Hodgenville.
