  • Vine Grove man drowns in Rough River Lake

    Kyle R. McGonigle was a dedicated son and father who spent every day like his last, according to his friends and co-workers. In his final moments, he was seen swimming after a dog that disappeared beneath the water in Rough River Lake at Peter Cave in Grayson County.

    McGonigle, 36, of Vine Grove, died Monday night in an apparent drowning, Grayson County Sheriff Rick Clemons said. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate factors that may have contributed to McGonigle’s death.

  • Area pools open soon

    With the heat index again creeping toward a stifling point, area pools are opening this weekend to cool everyone off.

    Colvin Community Center in Radcliff and E-town Swim & Fitness Center in Elizabethtown will reopen their outdoor pools as a feature of Memorial Day weekend while Elizabethtown will relaunch its outdoor pool at American Legion Park the following weekend.

  • Locals can get involved in aiding Oklahoma tornado victims

    When news rapidly spread Monday afternoon that a tornado, about a mile wide and packing wind speeds of close to 200 miles per hour, was ripping through the town of Moore, Okla., local Red Cross personnel knew they would be on standby to assist.

    By Tuesday morning, local American Red Cross Director of Volunteer Services Sharon Thompson was involved in a conference call about national plans to assist the thousands left without daily needs.

  • HMH bad debt balloons

    Hardin Memorial Health officials said they must simplify the application process for patients who cannot afford to pay their bills so they can qualify for assistance.

    At the same time, President and CEO Dennis Johnson said the health system will continue to practice “tough love” toward patients who can afford to pay but refuse to do so.

    Strategies were discussed Tuesday morning at the monthly Board of Trustees meeting as HMH evaluates an increasingly bleak financial outlook for the fiscal year with only two months remaining.

  • HMH approves salary increase

    Despite Hardin Memorial Health’s recent budget concerns, employees can expect a pay adjustment this summer.

    The HMH Board of Trustees approved a 1.5 percent general increase for eligible employees, a full percentage point lower than last year as the health system adjusts to a conservative labor climate.

  • Ekron man pleads guilty to theft charges

    A Meade County resident charged in a series of thefts from Wal-Mart in Radcliff pleaded guilty Tuesday during an arraignment in Hardin Circuit Court.

    Joseph D. Mullins, 29, of Ekron accepted a plea agreement last week through the county’s rocket docket program. On Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to three felony and two misdemeanor counts of shoplifting.

  • E'town to present budget in early June

    Elizabethtown Mayor Tim Walker said the public will get a detailed look at the 2013-14 fiscal year budget early next month.

    Walker plans to present the budget and deliver a message during Elizabethtown City Council’s June 3 meeting.

    He declined to release specifics on the budget Monday afternoon because details of the spending plan are being finalized. Council members met multiple times last week at City Hall to review and fine tune the budget and planned to wrap up discussions Monday night.

  • EIS approves tentative budget

    Elizabethtown Independent Schools are weathering tight financial times with the district’s savings.

    The EIS board approved the district’s tentative budget Monday night at its regular meeting at Panther Academy. The budget shows the district spending more out of its general fund than it’s taking in, but a hefty contingency and starting balance in the budget allows the move, according to Finance Director Denise Morgan.

    From running track to a career in officiating, teacher Patty Rouse’s life is a race she likes running.

    She started in track and field as a fifth-grader in Fleming County. Before her family moved to Kentucky, she was raised on chicken farms in Arkansas. In Arkansas she participated in barrel racing and horseback riding.
