  • PREP ROUNDUP: Panthers rout Taylor (05/17)

    Sophomore Zeke Pinkham hit two home runs and drove in eight runs to lead Elizabethtown to a 15-3 victory over visiting Taylor County on Thursday.

    Pinkham continued his torrid spring with a grand slam and a three-run blast in the five-inning triumph, helping the Panthers (23-9) win their third straight.

    Seniors Garrett Morgan and Cannon Pender and freshman Hunter Sullivan had three hits apiece to spearhead a 14-hit attack. Morgan and sophomore Cody Bridges each scored four runs.

    Sullivan earned the win on the mound to improve his record to 7-2.

  • PREP SOFTBALL: Lady Hawks rout E'town (05/17)

    Heading into the postseason, LaRue County coach Aaron Howell liked what he saw from his Lady Hawks on Thursday.

    They pounded out 20 hits, scored 13 runs and backed junior pitcher Brigitte Skaggs with solid defense to roll to a 13-2 win over homestanding 5th Region rival Elizabethtown.

    When the Lady Hawks are playing like this, Howell said they are a dangerous team.

  • Meade first responders honored by Fort Knox, Army

    Two men who helped one U.S. Army family were honored this week.

    Todd Matti, an officer with the Brandenburg Police Department, and Larry Naser, chief of the Meade County Fire Protection District, received the Civilian Award for Humanitarian Service. Matti and Naser were honored for saving the life of Wyatt Bean, the son of retired Fort Knox soldier Justin Bean.

  • BOYS' PREP TENNIS: Difficult day at State for area boys (05/17)

    LEXINGTON — All three area doubles teams knew they had their work cut out for them in going up against seeded opponents in the KHSAA State Tennis Tournament.

    When you add in a withdrawal, a third-set loss and a busted racket, area singles players didn’t have much luck either.

  • Rachel Ritchie accepts donations for Fun for Everyone

    RachelRitchie, a third-grader at Vine Grove Elementary School, accepts checks for $100 from Snappy Tomato, $50 from Once New thrift store and $500 from American Legion Post No. 113 to go toward the Fun for Everyone project. The effort is meant to fund a playground to be used by all children, including those with disabilities.

  • Jury speaks to Optimist Club of Radcliff members

    Ed Cardiff, treasurer of the Optimist Club of Radcliff, presents guest speaker Lori Jury with a certificate of appreciation. Jury, the recreation director for the city of Radcliff, spoke to the club about activities available to youth in the community, to include swim lessons, upcoming lifeguard training, the ball parks, Saunders Springs Nature preserve and more.

  • Million-dollar lottery ticket sold in Radcliff

    A convenience store next to the railroad track on Radcliff's northern edge has a millionaire among its customers.

    Smitty's sold a Powerball ticket that came one number short of winning the national jackpot, according to the Kentucky Lottery Commission.

    Howard "Smitty" Ford, who has operated the store for the last nine years, said he doesn't have any idea who won the prize.

    The lottery corporation encourages the ticket holder to sign the back of the ticket immediately. The winner has 180 days to claim the prize.

  • Hardin County Fair pageant registration set for May 28

    Registrations for this year’s Hardin County Fair Pageants are from 6 to 7 p.m. May 28, at the Hardin County Fairgrounds.

    Contestants must reside in Hardin County and will need to provide a copy of their birth certificate at time of registration. The pageants are July 8 through 13 during the fair.

  • Schmidt Family Foundation supports Greenspace

    On May 2, Jan Schmidt, representing the Schmidt Family Foundation, presented a substantial check to Greenspace Inc., Elizabethtown’s non-profit organization that builds and maintains the Greenbelt system of hiking and biking trails throughout the city. Schmidt and her late husband, Bill, have long been strong supporters of Greenspace. Accepting the check for Greenspace were Treasurer Ed Sprague and Board Member Joan Noel.
