  • Tea to encourage strong mother-daughter relationships

    A Radcliff church is encouraging good relationships between mothers and daughters this weekend with a new event.

    The All Nations Worship Ministries Daughters of Destiny is hosting its first mother-daughter tea from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Colvin Community Center on Freedom Way in Radcliff.

    The cost is $15 for each set of mothers and daughters and $2.50 for each additional person, which covers a luncheon.

  • KSP Post 4 honors its fallen troopers

    Kentucky State Police Post 4 honored its four fallen troopers who have been killed in the eight-county post area.

    Lt. Willis Martin, 44, Trooper Lee Huffman, 27, and Trooper Eddie Harris, 29, were killed in Hardin County. Trooper William Pickard, 26, was killed in LaRue County.

    Each year in May, Post 4 troopers place flowers on the officers' graves before offering a prayer and salute.

  • Local tourism up 9.1 percent in 2012

    Hardin County’s tourism industry is flourishing

    A report from the Kentucky Tourism, Arts and Heritage Cabinet indicated the county’s direct economic impact from tourism climbed 9.1 percent in 2012, infusing the local economy with more than $15 million of additional spending above the prior year.

    The county recorded $182 million in direct tourism spending during 2012, according to a joint news release issued by the Elizabethtown Tourism and Convention Bureau and the Radcliff-Fort Knox Tourism and Convention Commission.

  • Tiotuico receives Outstanding Teaching Award at piano festival

    Carina Tiotuico, of Elizabethtown, received the 2013 Outstanding Teaching Award at the 15th Annual Morehead State University Piano Festival and Monster Concert. Each year, one piano teacher is recognized based on the level of preparedness, talent and professionalism of their students in both ensemble and solo genres.

  • Crash film 'artfully done'

    Thomas Hertz didn’t sleep Tuesday night.

    Along with many survivors from the church bus crash near Carrollton, Hertz observed the 25th anniversary of the crash Tuesday by attending a private viewing of the documentary “IMPACT: After the Crash” at the Historic State Theater in Elizabethtown.

    The 82-minute documentary took survivors back to that fateful night in 1988. To the parents and families of those who died in the crash, it provided further insight into what their loved ones endured on Interstate 71.

    Tina Watson wiped away a tear as her 2-year-old daughter, Dallas, stood nearby, fresh off an impromptu dance on Brooks Field as the 113th Army Band launched into the Army song.

    Her husband, Pfc. Keith Watson, stood in a line of soldiers Tuesday morning, hoisting a flag against the brilliant blue sky, fluttering in the breeze.

    “We’re just ready for him to go and come back,” she said. “He’s excited. It’s his first experience.”

  • Active life keeps Radcliff septuagenarian young

    An active life seems to keep Alma Hahn young at 75.

    The substitute teacher sings in a woman’s chorus, gives piano lessons and in the past 15 years had a stint teaching English in China and participated in mission trips to Germany, Taiwan and Brazil.

    “I just think the Lord has answered so many of my prayers,” the Radcliff resident said.

    A proponent of good nutrition, Hahn and her husband, William, 76, still ride bicycles.

    “We don’t take any medications,” she said.

    As far back as I can remember, my mom has sewn.

    She made dresses for my sisters and me, always in the latest styles and colors. Mom might use a paper pattern for a baseline, but she added her own unique touches. When I was a girl, some mornings I would wake to find a new Barbie doll dress on my night stand. When my boys were young, she made surf shorts for them in wild prints.

  • PREP ROUNDUP: Elizabethtown softball beats 20-win Hart County (05/15)

    Eighth-grader Taylor Thomas went 3-for-3 as she helped Elizabethtown top 20-win Hart County, 6-2 on Thursday.

    Thomas doubled twice, singled, drove in a run and scored once. Freshman Carly Patterson doubled, singled twice, drove in a run and scored once.

    Junior Brianna Taylor went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles and two runs scored for Elizabethtown (12-14), which won its fourth straight.

    Eighth-grader Callie Sondergard struck out six in seven innings. She gave up five hits, four walks and one earned run.
