  • Christmas trees ready to trim

    HARDIN COUNTY — Mother Nature seems a little grinch-like, inflicting back-to-back droughts on local Christmas tree farms.

    But droughts were not enough to steal the holiday cheer.

    Danny Puckett, owner of Puckett’s Tree Farm in Elizabethtown, said the drought killed a lot of first- and second-year trees. Blue spruce in particular didn’t fare well.

    But all is far from lost.

    Troy Marlin Brown, 34, of Sonora, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2008. The funeral is at 2 p.m. today at Olive Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Sonora with burial in Miller Family Cemetery. Visitation continues from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. today at Manakee Funeral Home in Sonora.

    ELIZABETHTOWN — Toni Perry’s eighth-grade class tried their hands at presidential speechwriting Monday.

    Students at T.K. Stone Middle School completed their election lessons by sending six words to the National Constitution Center that could be considered for President-elect Barack Obama’s inaugural address.

    One of the most hotly contested races in November didn't come from a battle for a spot on a city council in Hardin County. It was in the election for the presidency of Hardin County's Chapter  of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

    In that three-person race, local chapter president Hortensia Morgan was unseated by businessman Allen Francis. Morgan had held the leadership role in the organization since 1999.

  • Festival of Trees takes in more than $30,000

    ELIZABETHTOWN

    The annual Orchestra and Festival of Trees, hosted by SpringHaven Inc., brought in an estimated $33,000 this year, with an increase in ticket sales, said Lisa Holmes, executive director of SpringHaven.

    “I’m always amazed at the community response to this event,” Holmes said. The event is in its seventh year and benefits SpringHaven’s domestic violence program, which serves domestic violence victims’ needs in Breckinridge, Grayson, Hardin, LaRue, Marion, Meade, Nelson and Washington counties.

    Valley recount

    A hearing is scheduled for today in Hardin Circuit court concerning a requested recount of contested state House votes in the Pine Valley precinct.

    County Clerk Kenny Tabb asked for the hearing because so much has been said about the matter and so a judge could see exactly what is going on, he said.

    FORT KNOX — The Christmas season can be a lonely time for those away from home, especially soldiers who spend most, if not all, of the holidays deployed elsewhere.  

    But for basic trainees, the U.S. Postal Service and Fort Knox have created an annual partnership in an effort to assist the troops in their holiday pursuits and make them feel a little closer to home.
