  • Upton station up for Inspirational Country Music awards

    A Christian radio station in Upton has a lot to sing about lately.

    Not only does WJCR plan to open a new station this weekend — a few months after it christened a 1,400 seat pavilion — but it also was nominated for an Inspirational Country Music award.

    It is one of five stations competing for best Inspirational Country Radio Network. Plus, station manager Gary Richardson was nominated in the Radio Personality category.

    WJCR won the ICM Radio Network award in 2008.

    Elizabeth Ann Habermehl Appelman

    Elizabeth Ann Habermehl Appelman, 77, of Augusta, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2010, at her residence.

    Survivors include eight children, Lisa Appelman, Vicki Wenz, Thomas Appelman Jr., Steve Appelman, Carrie Jefferson, Connie Appelman, Pat Appelman and Emily Appelman; and a special daughter, Janice Towles.

    A Mass of Christian Burial is at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Augustine Church in Augusta with burial in St. Augustine Cemetery.

    Charles Anthony ‘Charlie’ Clark Sr.

    Charles Anthony “Charlie” Clark Sr., 83, of Vine Grove, died Saturday, July 31, 2010, at Hardin Memorial Hospital in Elizabethtown.

    Charlie was a loving father and grandfather. He retired from Houchens after 35 years with most of that time being in Vine Grove. He was a veteran of World War II and a member of St. Brigid Catholic Church.

    He was preceded in death by his son, Billy Ray.

    Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Barnes

    Elizabeth “Betty” Barnes, 96, of Bullard, Texas, formerly of Elizabethtown, died Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2010, at East Texas Medical Center in Tyler, Texas.

    She was a native of Chicago, a beautician and a member of Cecilia Baptist Church. She had a passion for fishing, crafts, and playing games and puzzles.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine McGilicuty Bredimus; her husband, Hollis Barnes; and a daughter, Alice Corinne Tharpe.

    A former member of the Kentucky Supreme Court will help a local college honor the U.S. government’s founding document.

    Former Chief Justice Joseph E. Lambert of the Kentucky Supreme Court will speak at 4 p.m. Friday in room 212 of the Regional Postsecondary Education Center at the Elizabethtown Community and Technical College. Lambert’s topic is “Courts and the Constitution.”

  • The white lies of caregiving

    I’ll admit it, I lie. And I encourage other people to do so. Now if you will allow me to explain.

    I talk to many people who are the primary caregivers for family members and friends, many of whom are in frail health due to chronic illness or disease. The illness or disease is not always in the physical form; many of them suffer from mental illness, dementia or related brain disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease.
