  • Chappell gets new assignment to Pennsylvania

    Col. Carl L. Chappell Jr., son of Vernon and Jackie Huffines of Elizabethtown and the late Carl Chappell Sr., has been given a change of command from Fort Lewis, Washington, to become a faculty member of the Army War College in Carlisle Barracks, Penn.

      Elizabethtown’s Tumbleweed Restaurant Manager George Durham, right, presents Post 113 American Legion Riders Director Bob Fulkerson with a donation of $500, proceeds from the Heartland Festival food booth. Tumbleweed and the American Legion Riders teamed up to raise money for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship program. The proceeds will help provide educational assistance for the dependents of America’s soldiers, who have died in combat since Sept. 11.

      Paige Malito was among 90 other county fair queens at the opening ceremony for the Kentucky State Fair. She will represent Casey County as she competes for Miss Kentucky State Fair in January in Louisville. She has competed for the title before as Miss Southern Kentucky and last year as Miss Hardin County where she placed in the top 15. She is the daughter of Darlene and Perry

    At the Sept. 23 meeting of the Elizabethtown Noon Rotary Club, polio survivor Rick Green shared some of his experiences with the disease. The International Rotary Club has been a major factor in the mission to eradicate polio from the planet through the development of the Polio Plus program.     Woman’s Club of Elizabethtown officers, department chairpersons and committee chairpersons met to plan activities and projects for 2008-09.

    The first meeting of the year is Sept. 5 at the Brown-Pusey House. The board meeting is at 9 a.m. followed by refreshments at 9:45 a.m. and meeting at 10:30 a.m. The program will be presented by John Lay on the Lincoln families.

  • Stitchers Quilt Guild has August meeting

    Judy Cox, the featured stitcher for the August meeting of the Stitcher’s Quilt Guild is pictured with a log cabin quilt she made in the 1980’s. She loves to piece tops together but often gets others to do the quilting.
