  • Third Street fire

    Firefighters work on a house trailer fire Thursday night on Third Street in Elizabethtown. Central Hardin and Rineyville volunteer fire departments  battled the blaze. Central Hardin Fire Chief Everett Roberts said the unoccupied trailer was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived. An investigation into the cause likely will be called for, Roberts said.

    Edward Truman Causey, 59, of Radcliff, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008. A celebration of his life will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday at Abundant Life Church in Radcliff. Nelson-Edelen-Bennett Funeral Home in Vine Grove is in charge of arrangements.

    Alice M. Curry, 73, of Georgetown, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008. The funeral is at 11 a.m. today at Zion Baptist Church in Georgetown with burial to follow in Maple Grove Cemetery. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. today at the church. Percell & Sons Funeral Home in Elizabethtown is in charge of arrangements.

    FORT KNOX — After viewing game tapes of Class 2-A, District 4 rival Danville, first-year Fort Knox coach Brandon Combs doesn’t know what to expect from the Admirals at 7:30 tonight at Admiral Stadium.

    Danville (2-2), which is coming off a 33-30 loss to Winchester George Rogers Clark, used two offenses and defenses against GRC and the week before against rival Boyle County.

  • PREP FOOTBALL OPINION: District races get underway tonight (9/26)

    This year, each Friday I’ll take a look at the week that was in high school football and look ahead at the upcoming week. District races kick into high gear this week. Although five-team districts, such as Class 6-A, District 2, began two weeks ago, Elizabethtown, Fort Knox, John Hardin and LaRue County, all part of four-team districts, play their district openers tonight.

    Martha Dowell

    Martha Dowell, 74, of Irvington, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at her residence.

    Survivors include four sons, James, Steven, Gregory and Kenneth Dowell; and a daughter, Susan Gilliland.

    The funeral is at 11 a.m. EDT Saturday at Alexander Funeral Home in Irvington.

    Visitation is from 5 to 9 p.m. EDT today at the funeral home.

    Bowen Goode Sr., 84, of Elizabethtown, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at Hardin Memorial Hospital.

  • Benefit walk, dinner supports two agencies

    ELIZABETHTOWN – Arnold Myers began participating in the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk three years ago, not long after his wife, Roberta, was diagnosed with the disease.

    Roberta died three weeks ago, but Myers is not about to forget the Memory Walk.

    Again this year, the café owner has rallied support from customers and suppliers to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the Alzheimer’s Association and another agency which recently became a true blessing for Myers and his late wife.

    Some changes we don’t need

    Sherry Kelley wants to talk about economics (“Stay on task,” Sept. 11, 2008). This is a subject near and dear to my heart and pocketbook so I will take the time to answer her.

    Since voting in a Democratic Congress in 2006, we have seen a lot of change. Change is something the Democrats are really for, it seems. Two years ago consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high. Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon. The unemployment rate was 4.5 percent. Not bad.

    Sisters Jessica and Hannah Howard combined for three goals as the surging John Hardin girls’ soccer team pulled away from visiting Barren County on Thursday night, 4-0.

    It was the seventh consecutive shutout for the Lady Bulldogs (9-2), who joined Bardstown and Elizabethtown with a region-best nine victories and became 1-of-8 girls’ teams in state history to record at least seven consecutive shutouts.

    Jessica Howard, a senior forward, gave the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 halftime lead with an unassisted goal.
