  • Louisville man charged with DUI, assault in Hardin County

    A Louisville man is charged with DUI, third-degree assault and wanton endangerment after a collision with a Kentucky State Police vehicle Sunday on Western Kentucky Parkway in Hardin County.

    According to a KSP news release, KSP Post 4 in Elizabethtown received multiple calls regarding a vehicle traveling eastbound in the parkway’s westbound lanes.

    Troopers found the driver, Thomas Coleman III, 70, near the 134 mile marker, police said.

  • Tuesday ceremony to observe 9/11 anniversary and honor area first responders

    To observe the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, local first responders will be honored at a ceremony Tuesday at Elizabethtown Fire Department’s Fire Station 1.

    “We feel we need to remember the ones who sacrificed their lives,” Fire Chief Mike Hulsey said.

    The ceremony, which begins at 10 a.m., will honor all area firefighters, law enforcement and emergency medical personnel, according to a news release.

  • Rose to be featured on two national 9/11 anniversary shows

    Elizabethtown resident Tony Rose has a different perspective than most on the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001, terrorists attacks on America.

    On that ill-fated Tuesday morning as he and many co-workers planned a retirement party for a fellow employee at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., American Airlines Flight 77, at a speed of 500 miles an hour, smashed into the Pentagon.

    About 200 people were killed at the Pentagon that day, including friends and co-workers of Rose’s, who then served as a U.S. Army sergeant major.

  • A fallen hero

    The morning of Aug. 28 seemed like any other at Michael and Alice Slaughter’s home off Constantine Road in west Hardin County. At 6:15 a.m., everyone was asleep in their beds.

    It wasn’t until the family’s chocolate lab, Jake, began barking excessively that they realized something was wrong.

    “He went haywire that morning,” said Melissa Heinly, the couple’s daughter who was at the house that morning.

    Once again, on my growing list of things to do, I have promised myself to organize and put important matters in order. Simplifying, organizing and planning ahead for unforeseen circumstances should be a priority for all of us. For those who have already made these preparations, I commend you. For the other procrastinators, like me, the time to start is now.

  • Books for Babies gets donation

    The Cecilian Bank is aware of the importance early childhood education plays in the development of children and to support those efforts the bank recently contributed $1,500 toward the Books for Babies program. This program provides each newborn baby at Hardin Memorial Hospital with a very first book for the parents to read to their child.
