  • Jenkinses celebrate 40th anniversary


    Ronald C. and Lois L. Jenkins of Elizabethtown celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary June 6, 2010.

    They were married June 6, 1970, at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Upton by Brother W.T. Jewell.

    They have two children, Adam Jenkins of Clarkson and Hannah Riggs of Upton; and seven grandchildren.


  • Project Salute coming to Louisville


    University of Detroit Mercy School of Law’s Project Salute is coming to Louisville to offer free legal assistance to low-income veterans on VA benefit appeals.


    Now in its third year, Project Salute is traveling across the country in a mobile law office, a recreational vehicle custom designed, built and donated by an anonymous benefactor.

    30 years ago, a West Point man was recovering from Legionnaire’s Disease; the disease got its name after more than 20 persons died after attending a convention of American Legionnaires in Philadelphia in 1976. 20 years ago, Elizabethtown found itself without a police chief as Chief Leon E. Jones Sr. resigned to take over the job of chief of the Jefferson County Police Department.

    30 years ago, Western Kentucky University announced that it had begun offering master’s degrees at the Fort Knox Education Center. 20 years ago, Girl Scouts held an annual Cookie Kickoff at Memorial United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, hoping to sell a record number of Samoas and Thin Mints.

  • Grandparents welcome Carson Royce


    Jim and Ruth Cobbett of Elizabethtown announce the birth of their first grandchild, Carson Royce Raleigh, born on March 21, 2010. He weighed 9 pounds, 20 ounces and was 20 3/4 inches long.

    Parents are Michele Lawson Raleigh and Royce Raleigh of Louisville.

  • McGuffins celebrate 50th wedding anniversary


    Farrel L. and Virginia L. Critchelow McGuffin will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary from 2 to 5 p.m., June 26, 2010, with an informal reception given by their children at New Hope Community Church, 34 Dee St., Elizabethtown.

    The couple was married June 25, 1960 at Irvington Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Irvington.

    They have four children, Dennis McGuffin, Monica Cardin, Darrell McGuffin and Sandy Ringle.

    All friends and relatives are invited.

    Doug and Sandy Preston of Grover Hill, Ohio, and Tommy and Lisa Wathen of Flaherty announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their children, Lea Lynn Preston and Jacob Thomas Wathen.

    The bride-to-be is a 2001 graduate of Wayne Trace Junior/Senior High School and a 2006 graduate of the University of St. Francis. She is a registered nurse at Defiance Regional Medical Center in Defiance, Ohio.
