We live in a military community, so we know better than most that death is a part of war.
Still, the news this week that a young local man, Pfc. Nathaniel D. Garvin, was killed in Afghanistan is jolting. When a war death hits at home, it hits in a much different way.
He was one of us: A Hardin Countian, just 20 years of age.
Garvin was a former student at John Hardin High School. The Army says he died from injuries received in a non-combat incident at Forward Operating Base Frontenac in Kandahar, just two days before his birthday.
