    30 years ago, Julia Richardson acted the role of Amelia Bedelia from a story she read to students at Lynnvale School during “I Love to Read Day.” 20 years ago, “quick-change” artists who switched cards or fake money for real cash under the guise of wanting change struck several businesses in Hardin County.  

  • Witness: Erratic driving preceded fatal wreck

  • Lifelong singer, performer takes Open Up! stage

    IF YOU GO: Kevin Whitlock is among the performers featured in the free Open Up! concert at 7 p.m. today at The Historic State Theater. Other performers at the concert are Mamakitty Southwood, Matthew Pinkham with Katie McDaniel, The Perkins Brothers as Elvis and Meatloaf and Jonathan Saylor. The charity that will benefit is the “Building a Wall Against Hunger” project, which seeks to build a wall of canned food that will feed the area hungry.      30 years ago, the Hardin Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees adopted a resolution supporting a recent fiscal court discussion to lease the hospital to a non-profit group. 20 years ago, Larry Mahoney was sentenced to 16 years in prison for charges based on the 1988 Carrollton bus crash that killed 24 local youths and three adults.

    30 years ago, a wildcat strike followed firings at Phelps Dodge in Elizabethtown; four men had been fired for leaving the plant prematurely during a regular overtime work day. 20 years ago, rebates had boosted area auto sales in December and January, but local dealers said they wished the manufacturers would stick to making cars and not muddy the waters with confusing incentives.

  • Never too old to learn



    Juanita Doyle never graduated from high school, but now has decided to test for her diploma equivalency and make up for more than six decades of lost time.

    Doyle, an 80-year-old Bonnieville resident, is  taking her General Educational Development test. She never received a high school diploma more than 60 years ago.

    “I always felt like I left something unfinished,” Doyle said of leaving high school in 1946 to get married.
