    30 years ago, the jobless rate in Hardin County was up .5%, from 5.4% in September to 5.9% in October; the statewide rate was 5.7%, and the national rate, 5.6% 20 years ago, the Elizabethtown School Board accepted with regret the resignation of physical education teacher Pat Durbin who was to take over as mayor of Elizabethtown in January.

    30 years ago, a 74-year-old woman was convicted or reckless homicide and sentenced to a year in the state penitentiary in her husband’s slaying.

    20 years ago, American Legion Post No. 113 held a Veteran’s Day Memorial service and destroyed 27 American flags that had been removed from service at various schools, industries and residences.

    Bobbie Lorine Pentecost, 45, of Cecilia, died Friday, June 4, 2010. The funeral is at 1 p.m. today at Manakee Funeral Home in Elizabethtown with burial in Elizabethtown Memorial Gardens. Visitation continues at 9 a.m. today at the funeral home.

  • PRO BASEBALL: Adcock makes first All-Star game (6/7)

    By CHUCK JONES cjones@thenewsenterprise.com When Nathan Adcock steps on the mound for the Bradenton Marauders, it’s like old times for the 6-foot-5 hard-throwing right-hander. Adcock is pitching like he did in his days at North Hardin when he was named Kentucky’s Mr. Baseball in 2006.

    Gladys ‘Lorenia’ Humphrey

    Gladys “Lorenia” Humphrey, 91, formerly of Battletown, died Sunday, June 6, 2010, at Britthaven of South Louisville.

    Survivors include two nieces, Margaret Lavern Sedoris and Deanna Sinnett.

    The funeral is at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bruington-Jenkins-Sturgeon Funeral Home in Brandenburg with burial in Bogard-Greer Cemetery in Battletown.

    Visitation is from 3 to 8 p.m. today and continues at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

    30 years ago, Hardin County merchants said that shopping during the 1979 Christmas season was “the best ever.” 20 years ago, TeleScripps Entertainment announced a major expansion project that would make cable television available to more rural parts of Hardin County.

    30 years ago, it was announced that the Hardin County Emergency Medical Service would quit its franchise with the county on Christmas day. 20 years ago, North Hardin HOPE opened the doors to its new office next to the Radcliff Fire Department on South Wilson Road.

    30 years ago, water seeped into an underground telephone cable, causing several hundred General Telephone customers in Elizabethtown to be without phone service over the weekend. 20 years ago, Larry Mahoney was found guilty of 81 crimes involving the Carrollton bus crash, and was convicted of manslaughter instead of murder.
